I'm a big Denver Broncos fan, so I joined Meetup.com and found a DC group of people who like the Denver Broncos as well and went and watched the game with them yesterday. It was awesome.
So ... places like meetup.com can be a good resource to finding people in your area with similar interests.
I've looked up a couple of groups on meetup.com which seems kind of cool, but then I look at past events from the groups that might interest me and see "0 members attended" "1 members attended" and it's kind of discouraging. Also there seem to be VERY VERY few people my age actually on that thing in my area :(
New "dumb" York is about an hour drive, hour and a half train ride - not really within "come hang out and watch Terminator 2 with us" distance unfortunately
We're in Fairfield, about an hour and a half train ride from NYC - we've really only been there twice within the period of a year. I'll totally come out there and visit you guys!
It's hard to make friends who aren't insane or want to take advantage of you. I think it's a process that takes years and years to accomplish whenever you move somewhere new.
David started his own VW group from the VW Vortex forums to meet up and talk about car stuff with people which then later ends up at the Wii or XBox when everyone is exhausted talking about the timing belt they don't want to replace in their 80,000 mile 1980 VW GTI.
A lot of people just fall into that acquaintance category but finding people interested in going to places or talking about a hobby you like is one place to start.
I've seen people using Twinkle on the iPhone around here asking if people want to hang out at some coffee place, movie, etc... I think it's insane but people actually do it. It sends out a twitter message and anyone within 50 miles can read the messages. Funky.
