I just found out the other day that there are state laws regarding engagement rings and who gets to keep them in the event of a breakup. Supposedly in California, it's considered a contract, so the person who breaks it off is the person who doesn't keep the ring. (i.e. choice 3)

[edit] Uh, sorry, I just realized that sounds like I was saying I was looking into this for personal reasons - we were actually just as the jewelers getting our wedding bands ordered and we happened across the subject. NO DRAMA HERE THX

Yeah I've heard of that law too, I think it makes sense.
