I love this - the tennis ball is so simple, yet so brilliant. Love this line:

When she had whined to her mother about her diminutive stature, she had merely received the cryptic reply, “Well, your great-grandmother was a Marchbanks,” as if that settled the matter.

Such a great detail, and the contemporary ending works very well. Nice one!
