I enjoy speculation and debate, never accept things slavishly without a little thought (hence my - I hope - reasonably balanced Eleven post, lol)... but honestly, Merlin is just entertainment, not purporting to be true to the legend any more than the recent Arthur film was. It's teatime programming, like Demons on ITV or Doctor Who - it has to appeal to the family audience, whether people like that or not. I quite like Merlin but I will never be in its fandom, so I'm lucky to be on the outside looking in. Fandom will never change, will it?
Well yes - it doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't. I can fully understand if not everyone gets into the fandom - not everything is for everyone (that would be very very boring!!!).
But yeah, you are right...fandom will be fandom :-)
M'dear, our journals are meant for expressing our opinions. And as you well know -- yours and mine are rather parallel on this issue (by the by, I think there might be an extra http:: in the coding for the link to my journal in your post as it's not working at the moment).
And my biggest issue continues to be the fact that certain members of fandom truly believe that we should only be fans of shows which are -- essentially -- politically correct. And well written!! Excuse my language for a moment; f*ck that.
Show me the shows that are politically and socially correct. ::begins to hum::
::still humming::
::getting bored of humming::
Ladies and gents, television is entertainment. It's not politically correct. 'Nuff said. And on that note, I'm going back to my fandom corner.
Ha! Don't you hold back sweetie..you tell it as it is :)
Me? I'm quite happy wallowing in the shallow end or whatever end I fancy when the mood takes me and have no intention of getting involved in stupid debates of the kind you mention. I saw the article..didn't understand a word of it,. have never worked out what meta is anyway..
Blah blah whatever, my main irritation with the Merlin fandom is that 1) it has been struck by the curse of the crappy manip & 2) it has been discovered by people from other fandom who are now going to inflict their bad!fic and general annoyingness on me there as well.
I fully intend to enjoy whatever show strikes my fancy for whatever reason however crappy it may or may not be *shrugs*
ETA: And I reserve the right to point and laugh at people who take it way to seriously *nods*
But it has also been discovered by some utterly fabulous authors and vidders and artists; oodles of excellent SGA people are coming over
Oh true (not that I know they are excellent at the time, knowing nothing about SGA fandom) I am just thinking of a couple of specific people I know from LOTR, I was less than delighted when their names started reappearing on my flist *grumbles*
