I was woken up early this morning by a thunder storm so I got up and watched it.  For half an hour.  It had been thundering for a while before that.  A pity that the hills that I could see out the window were wreathed in cloud, but I did manage to see a couple of lightning strikes that lit up the room as bright as daylight.  A thunder storm that ( Read more... )

Places with nice hills do tend to trap thunderstorms so that they last. Wanaka certainly has that happen, and when it does you can sometimes track the storm bouncing around the hills by where the thunder is coming from. In contrast to those storms (mostly sheet lightening) the storms we got in Tuscaloosa were spectacular - they were often associated with tornado warnings or similar and tended to throw around a lot of forked lightening! If I'd had a tripod for my camera (and had had a chance to look over the manual options....) I'd have tried to get photos.
