I complained when Titanic came out. I complained more when it won so many Academy Awards. And it's the example I point to first when people tell me a movie is great because the Academy thinks so...
i didn't really like Titanic (well, i liked the part where the disaster occurs, because i really like disaster movies), but somehow seeing Rose as an old woman really made me sad, especially when she was thinking back over her life--she'd survived the titanic, flown planes, ridden horses, etc, but when they saw her she was just some old lady. i guess that's why it made me sad, to know she was at the end of her life, and the people closest to her may never have known the incredible things that happened to her.
but, yeah, the movie was incredibly melodramatic and long. but seeing real footage of the titanic, knowing that people were still entombed within it, well that was chilling.
oh but, yeah Flags of Our Fathers was good. Kind of reminded me of the first part of Saving Private Ryan, mixed with a little Windtalkers and a little Band of Brothers and a smidge of Pearl Harbor thrown in for good measure.
But probably better than any one of those movies individually.
