The new car dilemna

I keep going back and forth when I think about my next vehicle. This is a problem, since my current vehicle really does need to be replaced in the very near future.

Here is the issue. )

consumerism, purchase, car

It's funny - I had the same debate when we bought the Yaris. Mechanically you just never know what you're getting if you buy used. You can get a certified used, which costs a bunch but comes with a warranty, and has hopefully been inspected to prevent major difficulties. If you know someone who knows cars, you can take them along, and hopefully avoid the worst possible mistakes. In the end it's a crapshoot. I would like to point out that there are turbocharged minis available now, and that turbochargers improve gas mileage.

Another thing about debt is the question of what you are doing with your money anyway - if it isn't working awful damned hard for you anyway, you're better off being in debt, because then you're guaranteed to make the payments (investments) whereas otherwise you might feel all flush and spend all the money on blow. Or whatever.

I went into debt with my Honda... here's why. My other two cars have been an 85 Jeep which broke down every month until it died a terrible oily death, and the 76 Mercedes which I still miss but couldn't afford the repairs. The Honda although used had only 40K on it, perfect condition... I'm so happy I got it I don't mind the extra monthly cost because I have a reliable car with every bell and whistle I could wish for. I spend so much time in my car I look at it as office rent. Plus the stress of selling the old car and looking for a new one is Horrid! I bought a car that should (heavens willing) last me another 10 years at least. I think that deep down you want the more expensive car but you just need to give yourself permission to get it. Think about how long you intend to keep said vehicle... is it worth the extra investment? For me it totally was. Best of luck.
