I feel I must inform all of you that I am the type of woman who gets cross with little elderly ladies in nursing homes. Let the de-friending begin. ( Guilt! Tastes good with anything. )
wowee. Don't feel guilty. Frustration in that sort of situation would be inevitable. I have a grandparent who despite having no idea what her name is, what year it is, or that stray cats shouldn't be breeding in her house still won't go live in assisted living...so you earn an honor badge in my book! *hugs*
*hugs you back* The sad thing is, I want to grow up to be that grandparent of yours, living with my gajillion cats in some blissful, slash-happy dream world.
LOL! I totally get that! Come join Lily and I in the nursing home where we'll drool and write porn on teh walls. We'll let you bring your thousands of cats!
Sounds to me like Bette's not looking for a solution but for sympathy. She's been getting reassurance/comfort from acting like she does for years but perhaps having you get angry with her might help shake her out of the habit. One can hope.
You're probably right about her wanting sympathy, not answers, from us. And if we just did that, she might enjoy it more -- but oh, what a depressing way to spend an afternoon.
I don't see anything that you should feel bad about. She can't be reasoned with, and she really did say something inappropriate about Rich. Some older people can be quite self-absorbed, and meanwhile you and Rich have your own situations. I think you were quite patient with her!
Thanks, Gen. I think we all can be too self-absorbed, actually, and most people who aren't saints have to constantly fight the tendency. I need to remember that she loves Rich, even if she's criticizing him or trying to hurt him. People do strike out at their loved ones, particularly when they're sick.

Good for you for defending Rich.
