Chemo Update

Oct 17, 2008 13:12

Yesterday's chemo involved a doctor visit, and the news from that is that we're ending the drug regime I was on and trying two new drugs, Topotecan and Avastin (also known as Topo Gigio and Avast, Mateys).

This is bad news in some ways, because it means the drugs I was being given weren't effective. However, since those drugs had nasty side effects which included depression, I'm kind of happy to see them go and hopeful that these new drugs will work. Good riddance, General Malaise and company!

Avastin is a fairly new cancer treatment, one that's still being studied and may be added to what they give newly-diagnosed ovarian cancer patients (what they call first-line chemo) soon. It's not a traditional chemo drug, but it is designed to interfere with tumor cells' ability to get a sufficient blood supply. The nurse who administered it says they're giving it to a lot of patients right now and she thinks it works very well. Which I really needed to hear, yesterday. Today, I'm feeling pretty good -- hopefully good enough to help Rich, who is a bit freaked about the whole thing.

The other good news is that the infusions are much shorter with these drugs, so hopefully there won't be any more long, long days at the cancer center. More nap time post-chemo is a very good thing.

Sending love to all of you today, and raspberries to the fucktards of the world.
