Illinois has an early voting program and I took advantage of it yesterday, post-chemo treatment. That's one less person in line on election day (and one less thing on my mind

Early voting just makes sense - as fun as an election day is, I don't know that it's realistic anymore to expect the entire country to make it to the polls on just one day. I voted early as a certain very special person will be occupying all my attention on the 4th...and even though I want to see him Prez, it aint gonna be Obama!
Hopefully you and TR are now eating marmite and toast, comfortable and warm. Chicago tried to blow her away, and then the Hilton tried to freeze her to death, but TR is a strong woman and prevailed.
We've brought early voting in here in Canada, too. However, most people still go to the regular polls in person on the day. Is it so unreasonable? It's not as though there's likely to be a blizzard at this time of year.
Our federal election was only a couple of weeks ago. You have fancy voting machines? I've heard of those-especially in relation to Florida and its "chads". (A while back, I know; but it did entertain us enormously at the time.)
We go the traditional low tech route here. A piece of paper, a pencil; X marks the spot; and the ballots are counted by real live people. It has its merits.
Do you get election results the same day with the paper ballots, or is there any delay? I'm trying to imagine Chicago voting with paper ballots... and it's not pretty. Think about election judges (those who watch the ballot count) shooting each other, think about millions of contested ballots because the x isn't neat enough. Not that the system we have is foolproof, either. But going low tech would be a nightmare, I fear.

To me, it is your system that sounds chaotic. If you rely on machines to do the counting, how do you eliminate the possibility of hacking? Leaving deliberate fraud out of it, there are some really clever kids out there who might do it just to prove they can. When the count is done by real people, they work in pairs-from different parties, so there won't be any collusion.
Each polling station does its own count. So there are lots of pairs doing the counting simultaneously, just of the ballots in the box at their station. You have a bit of a delay if there is a recount; but the only serious delay comes if there is a judicial recount, which only happens if the race is extremely close

I'm so sorry to hear your mom's been sick. I hope everything is ok now. And your robbery!!! Yes, it's wrong to leave your purse in the car where anyone can see it. But still! You'd think you could leave it for a few minutes without someone glomming on to it. Very glad you got back most of the difficult to replace stuff. The police in your area seem to be doing a good job (even if they don't understand Women Have Needs (Needs that have nothing to do with men)).
I love early voting! I go every year. That leaves me free to join in however it works best on election day. Every since 2000, I knew I had to get involved. This year it finally feels as if the majority of the country has decided that also. Yay! It's so exciting.
I imagine the year of John Kennedy felt like this...

Here in Chicago it's not *quite* like Kennedy's year -- mostly because our cemetaries all voted early this time. :)
