I hopped over from the CoMO community - did you ever find any lady fingers? I've wanted to make tiramisu for ages and have tried (but not very hard, just Schnucks and Gerbes and I bet if anywhere had them, it would be Hy-Vee) to find lady fingers, to no avail. Are they like vanilla wafers?
yeah, i started at schnucks and gerbes, and neither of them had mascarpone either. hyvee has mascarpone but not ladyfingers, and patricia's iga has both. local businesses win again!
i think in a bind you could probably substitute any shortbread style cookie, but ladyfingers are unique because they're usually a lilte more porous than shortbread and they're about 3" long, so they fit into a square pan side-by-side a lot better than round cookies. the brand i like to use is "stella d'doro" because they absorb coffee very well without falling apart, but the brand that patricia's carries is "roland."
and as for the snow, no i don't have a shovel, but i live in an apartment, so there's not much really to shovel. i did break an ice-scraper on thursday, though, but i've always had two with me anyway.
