biggest question: how is your person getting to CA? you can take you cat on a plane but she counts as a carry on, which cuts into how much other stuff you can carry... i dont think you have a car, so you're not driving, right? there are those POD containers, which my friends have used but i found to be too expensive for the volume of stuff i was moving ( ... )

How much did it cost to use the card catalogue? How big was it? My furniture is so cheap that I don't think it's worth shipping it.

it was right around $100. it's about three and a half feet wide, four feet tallish? i dont know. it's antique and fucking heavy, though.

cheap furniture imho is not worth shipping. i left my bed, dresser, couch, chairs, dining room furniture and all of my various bookshelves. some were nice pieces, but not worth shipping so i sold them. i still kind of regret selling my antique hair dryer which had been converted into a standing lamp, but there's not really room for it in my current lifestyle.

A good friend of mine is driving cross-country to relocate, taking the U-haul with her dad, and having a friend who's going out there anyway drive her car out.

The computer should be able to be boxed up/packed well and shipped, as well as everything except the cat and records/record player. I've always carried records with me on a plane. Maybe a record player can be shipped?

It sounds like your stuff is easy to ship. Book rate. Insured, prolly. Be extra generous with bubble-wrap if it's at all delicate.

As for the drive-away, it all depends. Check craigslist. Some ppl would love to recoup some of the cost of gas... Me, I like the certainty of shipping, even at book rate. Sometimes priority mail has bloody low prices for flat rate boxes. Flat rate box might work best for heavy stuff like books. Check out usps.gov! :)

xoxo Bon voyage, cherie!
