Title: I like the way this is going
Characters/Pairings: James 'Sawyer' Ford/ Juliet Burke
Disclaimer: This wasn't beta-ed. For Ross, better later than ever, right?

I don't care about the past
None of it was made to last
Is not you've known
But who you're knowing

It was a dance. Since that day at the dock, he would say something witty; she would smirk and come up with something wittier, earning a smile and sometimes being called a wiseass.

Miles calls them the beauty and the beast one day, and it's Juliet who punches and tells him she's no beast. Sawyer genuinely smiles. One of those smiles that made his dimples and the little wrinkles around his eyes stand out; that damn childish look.

That look that she started to like, more than she should.

She arrives at the house after a long, bad day at the motorpool, and he’s starting to make dinner. She tries to help him, and he dismisses her.
‘Take a bath, and read your book, I’ll call you when everything’s ready’

He doesn’t tell her, he’s dying to discuss the book with her.

The music is loud and she just needs a minute to think, the gazebo is empty, and she rests against one of the columns looking at the starless sky.

‘I was looking for you’
‘Yeah? I thought that the new recruit was keeping you company’
‘Ain’t her the one I want to keep me company’

Her face is unreadable for about a second and then she smiles.
And he likes that smile, a lot. Especially when he’s the one to blame.

‘Morning’
‘Coffee?’
He just nods and she stretches to grab a cup, her tank top lifting a little, he gulps.
He knows she has no idea what she’s doing to him wearing those clothes around the house.

He listens to a muffled cried inside her bedroom. He lets her be, but when she finally comes out he looks at her inquiringly she blurts out. ‘Today’s my sister’s birthday’
And she wonders since when they started sharing life stories, but he’s looking at her, like he understands, and when she stops talking he squeezes her hand.
She asks if they found someone, something, in square 62. He shakes his head.

She’s thankful that he doesn’t ask more questions and accepts the change of the subject.

Like every other poker night, Miles goes to bed cranky after loosing all the hands, and Jin goes shortly after him.
She realizes lately Jin is making up excuses whenever the three of them are together, leaving the two of them alone.

There’s a moment when they cross each other clumsily while James is grabbing a beer from the fridge and she’s putting the dishes away. And his hand on her back lingers for a little more than necessary.
He leaves the beer on the table and starts helping her.

‘Not your turn James’
‘I know, but I’m not standing here doing nothing…' He stays quiet helping her for a couple of minutes, and then blurts out '6 months’
‘Already?’
‘Yeah, you’re not counting?’
‘Sometimes. Sometimes I try to forget’
‘I wish I could’ He glances down, and she squeezes his arm.
Looking up he finds her staring at him, warm, blue, reassuring eyes. She’s about to turn away, when he grabs her wrist pulling her back to him, when she doesn’t move and her eyes flicker to his lips for just a second, he stops thinking and acts. She doesn’t pull away. She doesn’t tell him, ‘this is a mistake’ she sighs into his mouth while he pushes her closer to him with his hands at her hips. He feels the trip of her hands up his back to his neck. She ends up against the counter, and when they break it off, he keeps his eyes closed. Still scared somehow, that she will run away. But she kisses his cheek sweetly and says his name. He looks at her, and her lips are back on his.

She’s not running away, and she doesn’t want to.

She comes by security and makes up an excuse to talk to him in private, but before he can ask what’s going on she’s kissing him. When he opens his eyes, she’s walking back to the ville, and throws a glance at him smirking.

The music is loud and before Horace can announce whatever he was going to, they’re sneaking back to their house, not really caring about anything else.

It doesn’t go unnoticed by Jin and Miles, and after a month the jokes get old.

The day Jin starts calling him James, not Jim, not Sawyer in private, just James, telling him not to screw, whatever is happening with Juliet, up; he goes to the motorpool, dragging her home. Whatever is going on has been going on for more than 6 months, and it's the first adult, sane relationship he’s been in.
He tells her that.

There’s a party going on, and god knows why, they just accepted that Horace likes to throw barbecues and other shenanigans whenever he can. She’s resting against a column in the gazebo, staring at the stars, and he hugs her from behind. Horace told me he wants to see us dance.
She turns around and kisses him.

He looks at her, and she's smiling. And he loves this carefree side of her, and her smile, and... he loves her. She loves him back.

She starts walking to their house, and he follows her.

They never make it back to the dance floor.
