Outward in All Directions
When you're a little kid, you make up stories. Like, your real mum and dad are a prince and princess, or something like that, and they live in a wonderful fantasy world, and one day they'll come and find you. They'll undo whatever stupid magic left you stranded in sodding Perivale, and you'll grow up fighting dragons. Grow up where you belong, with people who really want you.
Kid stuff. Stupid kid stuff. Eventually you grow out of it, don't you? You start to realize that no one's going to rescue you, that there's nowhere you belong, but that doesn't mean you have to just lie down and accept everything the way it is. You can make your own light, your own heat, your own loud BANG!, something that tells people, "I'm here, and I'm real, and I can make things happen!" But even that's still kid stuff, really. You make some trouble, you blow up the art room, and it's fun, it's wicked fun, but when it's done, where are you? Still in Perivale

Aww, this is so perfect, thank you! I really like the part about belonging everywhere. This makes me think of how the Doctor tells Susan to go forward in all her beliefs.

"this is it, this is what it's like to be born as the person you really are, not naff little Dorothy from nowhere, and it's brilliant. Until it's all over, and somehow you're still nobody, only now you're nobody in space"
"And, best of all, you might look for where you really belong and finally realize the answer is, you belong everywhere."
This fic is awesome and ace on its own and deserving of accolades for its own story and treatment of the character. It also really spoke to me based on where I am right now, and where I have been over the years, so I wanted to thank you for that (it's been bookmarked into my forever-favourites file).
