It makes sense, Sam tells himself. Ever since he recovered the memory of his father and the policewoman he’d brutally hit and kicked when she tried to prevent his escape, he’s come to the conclusion that she’s been living in the back of his mind for some time, suppressed by his younger self’s attempts to protect the happy memories he had of his father. But he remembers now, remembers the shock and the horror and how he desperately wanted to do something, anything, to protect the policewoman, but knew he was too small and scared to do anything but hide and try and make sense of what his father was doing. Now that his mind was telling him the policewoman and Annie were one and the same, it made even more sense. All the qualities he’d attributed to that policewoman had manifested themselves in Annie. He thought the policewoman must be brave, so Annie was brave. He thought she was pretty in her red dress, so Annie was pretty in hers. She was a victim of his father, like he was, so she would understand his plight, just the way Annie tried
