While googling around for this prompt, which I'd lost track of, I came across your earlier Yuletide letter. I'm not sure if this is the kind of fic you were looking for, but it was all my brain threw at me ( ... )

“Why then, lady, since you command it. I have seen enough of the seven deadly sins to send me back to the forest. For here is gluttony.” His hand swept out to encompass the remains of the feast, with its venison pasties and conceits, its ippocras and metheglin. “Here was wrath,” and his eye fell on Oliver, who gave him a measuring look in return. “Here's sloth,” and Le Beau, dozing in a corner with a goblet on his knee, woke under the sudden regard of the court. “Here envy had its nurturing, and ousted his brother, did it not, my lord Duke? Aw, thank you so much! This is excellent! Of course Jacques came because he wasn't getting enough misery elsewhere - why else? :-D (And I think I just... wanted more Jacques at the time? I had watched the BBC Shakespeare version and it was rather mixed, but Richard Pasco's Jacques was wonderful.)

I'm so glad you liked it - and I had fun reviewing the BBC version (dearly though I love Sir K's films, his AYLI was a bit brain-breaky.) It's odd - Jacques has so few lines, but he's one of the most memorable characters in Shakespeare. He's got a certain something: a bit like Eeyore, irritating but pithy.

Well, thank-you for the compliment, anyway - and I love your icon!

Aw, that's good to hear. And thanks - the icon's one of a BBC Shakespeare set I made ages ago. :-)

And Eeyore is a perfect description of Jacques, because, like Eeyore, he's contrasted with a lot of more optimistic, bright characters.

I hadn't seen that before, but it's quite true! There's no equivalent of Rosalind in Pooh, sadly - but she could make mincemeat of anybody in any incarnation. Poor Jacques had no chance.
