Car ownership is for suckaz

Sarah just called to inform me that the "new" Nissan died.  She's currently stranded on the highway waiting for AAA to come tow her back to the city from somewhere out in East Bay. Probably a transmission problem.  We just put a new starter and 2 new front axles in it a week ago.  It was supposed to be a reliable, low-maintenance car.  So far it's ( Read more... )

I can tell you first hand that if you can so much as follow instructions in a manual (repair book) have a minimum number of hand tools (ratchet set mostly) and a few hours to spare here and there, taking up home mechanic work is well worth it.

I just did the axles on my Subaru, about $150 total. $75 per part ordered online, maybe like 1.5 hours to install one axle.
Starter is an even simpler repair.
If you want to take up home mechanics, all you need is like $200 worth of tools, a repair manual like Haynes, Chiltons or Bently, some patience and spare time

I'm doing well. Mike and I have been rock climbing a lot recently, and the last couple weekends have been beautiful for it, so that makes me happy. I'm going to be going to Jamaica in November. Work is going well. All in all, things are good in Chadland.

Pam is going, too, actually. I just wasn't specific enough. We're going because some friends I met in Maryland were going, and asked if we'd like to come along. It's going to be a week just relaxing and having fun, which is going to be a weird vacation for me. Usually, I take vacations that are busy and intense, like my last one which was four days of rock climbing in the Rocky Mountains.

I'm sure you could make your week in Jamaica as busy and intense as you want. You could take up surfing or scuba diving or skydiving or something. ;>
