As far as image output goes it's not just the monitor callibration.
The type of paper, type of ink, printer settings, and all sorts of other things will affect the way your print comes out. So it's all well and good if you keep EVERYTHING the same both on the computer side and the printer side.
If you get your stuff printed else where, or a different machine or new brand of paper is used you will find your prints will most probably look noticeably different.
Even then your monitor "degrades" over time so you have to callibrate it pretty often :)
