"Two-headed dogs

Vladimir Demikhov, a surgeon from the Soviet Union, revealed his surgical creation of a two-headed dog in 1954. The head of a puppy had been grafted onto the neck of an adult German shepherd. The second head would lap at milk, even though it did not need nourishment - and though the milk then dribbled down the neck from its disconnected oesophagus. Both animals soon died because of tissue rejection - but that did not stop Demikhov from creating 19 more over the next 15 years."

You gotta love old scientific foreign language film footage...looks so sinisters! While these experiments seem silly, they inspired Robert White to conduct head transplants with monkeys, which has possible(somewhat theoretical) benefit to humankind.

Humankind is disgusting martinlemechant March 22 2008, 03:12:15 UTC
Whether or not this experiment will benefit the human species, we have no right to do such evil to another animal, regardless of their lack of ability to stand erect or have a bank account. If such horrors were being committed against an infant or a mentally disabled person, there would be a public outcry. The same should be for those of a different species. They may not speak in our language, live exactly by our customs, be productive in our society, or share our physiology, but like us, they are on this planet and like us, they desire freedom, life, and away from exploitation and harm. To violate someone's body like that simply because you have the power to do so does not prove your superiority to them, but your inferiority. We, as a more intelligent species should be better than that. However, we use our power and intelligence to go beyond the natural survival methods common in the Animal Kingdom, and at whatever cost, so that we can become immortal. We maim and torture beings for anti-wrinkle cream, hair bleach and dyes, plastic ( ... )
