Well, really depends on what you're after with social networks. Myspace has the population, so "whoring" yourself out for friends and such works out well in that case
( ... )
MySpace is a total hole, but I did get in touch with some old friends from long ago that I'd wanted to hear from again. So that's useful. Lots of people use the thing in spite of the utterly craptacular code the thing spits out. And the aesthetics of the place in general are cringeworthy. It's sort of like time-traveling back to 1998 or so, when the blink tag was still around, but adding video and sound (which usually clash with each other.) And most friend requests you'll get will be porn spam. Because you clearly don't have enough of that in your life already, eh

You and wyldkyss below mentioned the convenience of storing and managing separate networks within facebook. That, at the very least, seems cool.
I don't particularly want to join any of these, but there are some people who only use one or two (like me with livejournal). Even if myspace wasn't the asshole of the internet, I probably wouldn't take the time to check it unless it had a system in place to ping the hell out of me when someone adds me, which would mostly be porn, as you said.
Thank you for also mentioning Friendster and Orkut, because I'd forgotten about both. I won't be joining them but at now I know they exist. Some of my website clients have asked about marketing on social networks, so it's good for me to have a list of recommendations.
Everyone has a myspace, but the interface is horrible.
Now that facebook is open to the public, nearly everyone is on there too (my mom has an account even!) Also facebook can let you sort people by network (Ole Miss? How about Oxford as a whole? etc) which is pretty convenient.
hmm, for me i rank lj and flickr at the top of my social network. those are the two i check most often and on a regular basis
now that i've download a twitter desktop client, twitter is starting to quickly work it's way to the top of that list too
myspace and facebook come next and, like most people, i have those because i have friends/family that only use those as their social network and i want to keep in touch with them
i used to be really into deviantart but these days i don't even check it anymore. between flickr and my uber photoblog i don't even need deviantart anymore
(and muxtape is on my list of sites i'm really starting to dig too)
everything else, i use my google reader to keep up to date with :)
