❝Sometimes I drink blood, but it's not the blood I like, it's the color.❞
- Vampirism:
What The Great Mushroom War did not kill it mutated, leaving behind little that was viable for consumption. Up until she was turned, Marceline fed off of what scraps she could find in abandoned diners. One would think that bring turned would have solved her problems; however, it made them far worse.
As time wore on, and the fallout settled, fresh blood (human or otherwise) was almost impossible to lay hands on. With so many sick and dying to take blood carelessly would mean possible contamination for Marceline herself. Left with the options of starve to death or adapt Marceline, being the survivor that she was (and still is to this day), chose to adapt.
Perhaps this adaptation was more of a form of mutation? Seemingly out of necessity (and it being her favorite of all colors) she developed the unique ability to feed off of red itself (and all of it's derivative hues).Mutation or not it did not matter to her as she could feed without the associated risks and guilt. To this day she still has a preference for the color red over blood itself; however, this does not mean that she can not or will not drink blood. She can and does, just infrequently.

PERSONALITY!
❝I'm not mean, I'm 1,000 years old, and I just lost track of my moral code.❞
Marceline, or affectionately MarMar, is a product of her (lack of) upbringing, environment and blood. Without parents to guide her and only a stuffed bear for companionship for centuries she grew to be self reliant and fearless--to the point of craving danger, excitement and the unknown, all of this to a fault.
Due to her past she finds it very difficult to trust anyone, stranger or someone she knows well. The mere thought of being hurt or let down is too much for her to bare, so she buries her emotions (hopes and dreams) as far down as she can. When the emotional going gets tough the tough gets going. And by gets going we mean gets even. When she loses her temper she tends to release through out bursts (verbal and/or physical) or song.
The Vampire Queen is, in her heart of hearts, still the little girl that sacrificed a button off of her jumper to replace Hambo's missing eye. Despite the passage of time and the forced hardening of her heart she is still full of imagination, curiosity and energy. As an adult she still desires with her all to love and be loved; however, she is terrified of the consequences and thus opts not to get romantically involved. Yes, she is a romantic at heart; however, it is her own brand of strange love. Marceline is a passionate woman. If it means anything to her she is passionate about it. She is passionate about having a good time, her music, her friendships, her title, her pranks and even her enemies.
She puts herself forward as someone just looking to have a good time, consequences and the opinions of others be damned. To rule and role bound people (namely Princess Bubblegum) Marceline comes off as irresponsible, flighty, undignified and crass as nothing good comes from so much freedom. While there is some truth to this opinion it is not 100% fact as Marceline's independence is both her greatest strength and biggest flaw.
Marceline is the type of person who would rather be feared than seen as weak or meek. If you are fearful of her kind she will use that to her advantage and your discomfort/embarrassment. Very rarely does she act out of malice or the intent to hurt, her nature can best be described as Chaotic Neutral (opposed to her Father's Chaotic Evil nature). While not evil she does have the habit of occasionally taking a joke too far and hurting someone by accident (she forgets her own strength).
Even though she has troubles with the initial phases, once she finds someone to be trust worthy her faith in them is almost unwavering. If you are within her small circle of friends she is more bark than bite, gaining her forgiveness is as easy as asking for it. Mind, being forgiven does not mean that she will forget or let sleeping dogs lie-- she will prank/harass you until she feels that you've paid your dues.
Toward those whom have wronged or hurt Marceline (or her friends) she is steely, abrasive and flat out violent. If she does not like you she will go to any length to show it. As there is (insofar) only one person whom never apologized for their grievous insults and transgressions there is only one person that she despises: Ash.
All in all: While her body is over a thousand years old (she stopped physically aging when she was turned) she still has the mind and heart of a sarcastic, scared and lonely teenager who wanted nothing more than to be accepted, loved and cared for. Meaning that she is, yes, still maturing and learning to accept (and better) herself: She gets by with a little help from her friends.
BIOGRAPHY!
❝I've seen some things that would really make you say "like what?"❞
The story of Marceline is literally older than
Ooo itself, as she was but a girl when
The Great Mushroom War occurred. Orphaned (either because of the war or before, it isn't known yet) she wandered the ruined cities with her treasured stuffed bear
Hambo. She was hungry and cold but happy during those days, Marceline could face anything as long as she had Hambo by her side-- he was the only normal part of her very unconventional/abnormal childhood.
With her
Father's frequent "business trips" she would not see him again until sometime during the Great Mushroom War's aftermath. Together they searched for food (for her, demons eat souls) and shelter, he made his best attempt at teaching Marceline what he thought she needed to know to get by/become more powerful. Well, given how many years of her life he had missed she had the bases pretty well covered but went along with it anyway.
Both a teenager and human at the time, life was difficult enough. While he was never intentionally cruel or neglectful (in his opinion) of her he was far from the best parental figure or companion-- what truly evil creature excels at parenting? While the fact that their falling out happened over fries may seem childish it hardly was. Still a human she needed food to survive, food that he ate without a single (apparent) thought to her well being. In that single action he rendered his daughter not only unwilling to trust but also made her doubt that she ever was (or ever would be) loved. Her "devil may care" attitude became worse after this, an attempt to hide the fact that she was in pain. Unable to forgive her Father she took off on her own, her mind made up that she needed no one and that she would only be hurt and/or disappointed should she grow too close of anyone.
It was not until much later that she would resurface (as a vampire, she was turned when she was twenty one) and come into contact with others, living or otherwise, in Ooo. During those years of rebellion and self exploration she met a young Wizard named
Ash who would become not only her first friend but also love. Together they moved into a
tree fort in the Grasslands outside of
The Candy Kingdom.
Ash was perfect in Marceline's eyes! He was romantic, funny, sweet and adoring. Best of all he was just as wild as she was and allowed her to be herself. In being with With him the impossible happened, she was finally able to let down her guard and trust. Loving and being loved were feelings so alien to her that they easily blinded her from the truth.
The truth of the matter?
The Ash that she fell in love with was nothing like the Ash that she had committed herself to. The real Ash was was self centered, racist (he harbors a dislike and flat out disdain for "mere mortals"), narrow minded and sexist! Unwilling to go back to the empty life she led before meeting him, she did her best to hold onto what happiness their relationship bought her. Beggars can't be choosers and it wasn't as if her Father would magically come back into her (un)life, right? Putting up with so much for little bits of affection here and there Marceline contented herself with her relationship as she thought that it couldn't possibly get worse.
As it tends to (when people use that statement) it did get worse, way worse. Thinking that he had Marceline wrapped around his grubby turkey sandwich scented fingers he made up his mind to use her to further himself. He wanted to gain power without giving up anything of himself or his possessions; however, In his time with Marceline he had learned of what she held near and dear--her bass collection (her favorite being her heirloom
axe base) and her stuffed bear Hambo. The more loved an item is the higher its value on the Magic Market, so Ash made the obvious (and horrible) choice and stole/sold
Hambo.
Self centered to the point of tunnel vision he flat out didn't care how Marceline would react to her memento being taken from her, he assumed that she would be happy for him as he had traded it for a rare and powerful cherry blossom wand. He had accomplished something! He was one step closer to being the most powerful (and feared) Wizard in Ooo! What person in their right mind wouldn't be happy for him?! If she loved him she would be willing to do and give up anything!
Ash's "good" news was met with rage and sorrow, to his surprise. He had taken from Marceline the closest thing she had ever come to family! Her life long friend! Rather than show any remorse for what he had done or sympathy for his grieving girlfriend he choose to instead insult her (intelligence) which was the final nail in their relationship's coffin. In her fury she started "walking" and did not stop, which resulted in her traveling Ooo (and settling down briefly in several places along the way).
The wild child became a wild young adult, not only making a name for herself but finding her place. After killing the Vampire King she took up the rights (and title) of Vampire Queen. Feeling that it had been more than long enough (maybe for her emotional wounds to scar over) she made the decision to return to her home in the Grasslands, unaware that the adventuring brothers
Finn and
Jake had moved while she was gone.
