Ryu’s Real Type
Ryu has been in too many relationships after finishing high school. Well actually, it was only five. Four short ones and one that been following him for years. First it was Hayato, the one that’s been following him. When the first round with Hayato was over, he met a sweet girl. He dated her for several months. Problem was that she was too sensitive and wouldn’t let Ryu do much…Hayato broke that off when he yelled at the poor thing. When Ryu heard about it, Hayato received a nasty black eye. He refused to listen or talk to Hayato for four months. After that, there were two other girls. One was clingy and the other was too observant (in the matter of Hayato and Ryu’s relationship). Both didn’t last long.
Then there was the 90s rocker. He was the only other man aside from Hayato that Ryu dated by that time. He was older than Ryu but age didn’t matter to him. They didn’t have much in common, but they managed to connect. He reminded Ryu of Hayato by appearance and personality. They stayed together for a few months until Ryu realized that his feelings for the man were there only because of the Hayato’s similarities. He couldn’t lead him on, so they went their separate ways.
Afterwards, Ryu and Hayato began their yearlong on-again-off-again relationship. They were either head over heels for one another or cursing each other off. It wasn’t the prefect relationship, obviously, but they were there for one another.
Ryu left for Canada after that. He received a scholarship from his University for an exchange program. At that time, he and Hayato were still together, but he wanted a little break. He thought it would be best to leave. He was surprised (and a little scared) that Hayato was able to let him go so freely. But, the boy did, so Ryu left. He thought it would give him a breath of fresh air, which he needed. It didn’t.
The year in Canada wasn’t as Ryu had thought it would be. Because of the time difference, it was difficult to keep in touch with his friends. Sure, he had a few acquaintances during that time; there wasn’t anyone he could rely on. He actually saved money to visit Japan during his winter break, but it didn’t happen. His parents showed up at his doorsteps and forced him to go to New York with them. And that’s where he met Pete.
They went on a few dates. It was nothing big in Ryu’s eyes. Those dates were more dull than romantic. But Pete actually listened when Ryu talked unlike anyone else that he met in Canada. However, that was only in the beginning. The man helped him and vice-versa. It was when Pete first started branding their relationship as romantic and visiting his apartment every weekend that things started getting uncomfortable.
Ryu thought that they were no more than friends. They barely kissed, let alone had done anything else. He tried to keep his distance from Pete, but it didn’t work. Nothing worked with Pete. The man outsmarted him with everything. Ryu was getting fed up with him, but even screaming at the man didn’t help.
A month before Ryu’s return to Japan, Pete told him that he was leaving. When Ryu heard the news, he was ecstatic, on the inside, of course. However, that feeling only lasted seconds when Pete told him that he has been accepted to a school in Japan. At first, Ryu thought it was a joke; it wasn’t. And when Ryu arrived in Japan, Pete was waiting for him in the airport and invited himself to meet Ryu’s friends.
It was very awkward waiting for Hayato to show up at the bar. One of Ryu’s mistakes was telling Pete about Hayato. He was drunk at the time, but it was no excuse. For some reason Pete seemed too excited to meet Hayato. Ryu noticed his friends looking at him weirdly. He gave no expression. He didn’t even know how he was supposed to introduce Pete.
And then, Hayato walked in. Ryu saw him first, but Take called out to the man. Ryu quickly stood up, making room for Hayato to sit. He smiled briefly. It wasn’t very hard to see the look Hayato was giving Pete. Ryu could only guess what the other was thinking.
“Hayato….”
A quick hi left Hayato’s lips.
Then, Pete gave a forced cough. Ryu quickly apologized, though it was more to friends than Pete. His friends looked at him.
“Guys….this is my….err……”
He didn’t know how to finish that sentence. ‘This is my stalker?’ ‘This is my target to beat up next?’ ‘This is my creepy acquaintance?’
“Boyfriend,” Pete said, smiling brightly.
They were all in shock, including Ryu. His face grew a faint color of red when he saw his friends staring at him. I’m going to kill Pete when this night is over!!
“Pete…” Ryu gritted through his teeth, “This is Pete.” Who I will be sent to jail thanks to.
Pete quickly jumped into explaining how he and Ryu met in his broken Japanese. Ryu would usually tone out the man, but he couldn’t this time. He kept an anxious smile on his face, praying that one of his friends would notice it. They were frowning at him, but none said anything about it.
Somehow, the conversion drifted to Hayato, or as Pete kept referring, Hayaro. It made Hayato angry, Ryu knew it did. He wanted Hayato to jump up and smack Pete, but it didn’t happened. Then, Take started talking to Pete. Ryu kept glancing at Hayato, trying to mental talk to the man. They used to be in sync that Ryu just hoped it would work one more time. Sadly, it didn’t work.
Thirty minutes into it, Ryu got called up by his landlord and had to leave. He apologized and tried to drag Pete away. He didn’t want for his friend to endure what he had to go through.
“Time to go, Pete.”
“It’s fine, Ryu, I’ll getting to know your friends more,” Pete winked at him.
Ryu tightly grabbed Pete’s hand and hissed in English, “I swear if you…”
“Ryu~ don’t worry, I’ll be fine!”
Ryu released Pete from his grip, glaring at the man in the less obvious way possible. After apologizing again to his friends and glancing at Hayato, who seemed to be pissed off, Ryu left the bar.
He practically ran to his old apartment, which was a mile away from the bar. He didn’t bother with taxis. He had to go to the apartment and return as fast as he could. Taxis could only lead him into traffic at that hour. It took him twenty minutes to get to his home. His landlord was waiting in front of his door. Ryu walked up, breathing heavily.
“I’m sorry about earlier, Odagiri-san,” his landlord said, “Your mother informed me that you would be coming tomorrow night.”
Ryu, still trying to catch his breath, shook his head, “It’s ok…”
“Here,” the older man handed Ryu his key.
Ryu accepted the key and the man patted Ryu on the back.
“Drink some water, Odagiri-san,” his landlord smiles, chuckling.
“Yeah….” Ryu muttered, inserting the key into the lock and opening his apartment door for the first time in a year.
When he walked inside, it felt like nothing had changed. There wasn’t the smallest amount of dust in the place. His mother must have stopped by before he arrived in Japan. Ryu closed his eyes and shook his head. It was no time to think about his mother! He had to go back to the bar. But before that, he took his landlord’s advice. He went to the kitchen and grabbed a glass from the cupboard. He got some water from the sink and drank. As he finished his water, the doorbell began ringing. And ringing and ringing. Ryu called out that he was coming, but it didn’t stop. The ringing was getting on his nerves.
“What?!” He said as he opened the door. His eyes widened when he saw Hayato.
“I punched Jackass in the face.”
“Who?” Did Hayato get in another random fist fighting with some stranger?
“That bastard you call boyfriend.”
And that was it. Ryu broke into the largest smile he had ever given. Someone did notice! It felt like a dream. He just had to confirm it one more time…
“You did what?!”
Hayato frowned at him, “I punched him?”
“So I’m done with him?”
“Yes?”
“Thank you!”
Ryu quickly explained how Pete was just a big pain in the ass. He grabbed Hayato inside and pulled him into a heated kiss. Hayato being Hayato, wrapped his arms around Ryu small waist and took control. Ryu smiled. He would never admit it aloud, but damn! He missed Hayato more than he though!
Hayato was always there for him. They weren’t friends or lovers, they were more than that. Ryu was aware that they would probably break up again, but that’s who they were. Hayato would always come to him at the end and he would be the same.
Who cares if they had a love-hate relationship? So what if they would go one day with being together then the next wanting to kill one another? They would always end up together again. That’s how it was meant to be.
