About SPN AUs
Over on tumblr....
spikeschilde621 blogged her opinion on SPN AU fics today, and it prompted me to think about why, when I almost never read AU fics when I wrote/read in the BTVS/AtS fandoms, I am reading SPN AUs quite often. YAY FOR THINKY THOUGHTS.
With BtVS/AtS, I shared her opinion exactly, which is, in part: “when a fic is AU, all that makes them who they are is taken away from them and they are just some other dudes who happen to have the same names as our beloved boys.”
I used to think that AU writers were opposed to writing RPF, so AUs were convenient vehicles in which to play with pretty bodies and make them do what they wanted, all nice and neat-like with no moral issues. :)
Yeah, I said it. Pffft.
For the most part, I avoided AUs like the plague, because to me, they were a plague on my beloved Scoobies and Ministers of Grace. (eta: with a few really marvelous exceptions, especially tesla321's work because it is imprinted on my heart forevermore.)
I had a vicious love/hate relationship with the BtVS/Ats story arcs, but I was rarely bored.
Which is why I read SPN AUs - lately, SPN bores me to death.
Because (just sayin’):
~~ The Sam/Dean “don’t walk away, Renee” of it all has worked my last nerve.
~~ I miss Castiel.
~~ I resent the fuck out of season 6, which in my view squandered all of that great character development in S4 & 5 and wasted so much potential. And, sorry, but Castiel would never have torn down Sam’s wall for a distraction. He’s a soldier, but that is just the world’s worst bullshit. I CAN’T EVEN.
~~ So not on board with the same old/same old of S7 (so far). The Sam/Dean phony tension over Amy (REALLY? THAT’S THE BEST YOU COULD DO, PEOPLE?).
So, I’m looking for better stories.
But in a wry twist, I don’t read Wincest because I honestly don’t see it (even with two pairs of slash goggles), I don’t read J2 because as adorable as he is, Jared does not bang my gong, the Cockles stories I’ve read so far are just meh (recs appreciated tho) and most gen puts me to sleep. So there goes 80% of the story pool.
I have rules, sure - AU characters have to be the recognizable crew that I know from the show. No drag queen Dean, girl!Sam or Trannie Bobby. And Chuck on a crutch, no mpreg or tentacle sex.
Maybe I’m not as passionate about the characters in SPN as I was with Buffy - but that doesn’t feel true. I love them with the fury of a thousand fiery suns. They deserve better plot lines, better lives. And lately, certain AUs give them that.
