It's impossible to know exactly how much time has gone by since jumping through the portal to Quor'toth. The main way is watching how old Connor gets even though it's still hard to know. In the first cave Connor and I lived in, I kept a marking of each day that went by on the wall. Days that I could make out from the suns here anyway. With multiple sunsets, it gets a little confusing after a while. I was able to celebrate Connor's first birthday by marking the days on a cave wall if I counted them correctly. There wasn't a cake or candles like I'd always imagined having at every one of my son's birthdays, but it was a day I'll never forget.
Once we were forced to leave not long after that, I stopped counting the days on the wall. A group of Torslo demons decided they wanted to take up camp right outside and we had attacks nearly every night for almost a week before deciding we had to move.
I've often wondered when certain holidays or events take place back home that I've tried celebrating with Connor. We had a makeshift Christmas one year when he was about four. Connor was old enough that I told him the story of Christ's birth and the gifts he was given. He didn't really get the story of Santa Claus. There aren't exactly chimneys or reindeer here in this dimension. I still wanted to give him something though. I made Connor somenew clothes from skins and once he got the idea of how things went, he even gave me a new handmade knife to use for hunting.
Sometimes I pick other holidays to celebrate. St. Patrick's Day has been done a couple times. One I want to show him but can't is the Fourth of July. It's not exactly one I'd choose to celebrate given I'm not American, but hey fireworks. Who doesn't like fireworks? Oh and not to mention? They take place at night. Another I'd always wanted to celebrate with him ever since he was born, I can't because he doesn't understand the concept. And, well, I can't exactly take him to all the neighbor's houses to collect candy.
We all talked about it one day back at the Hyperion and what he'd dress up as. Fred wanted to dress him up as a pumpkin. Gunn got a kick out of him dressing up as a vampire... or me. Wes, Cordy, and Lorne all had their ideas too. I kind of wanted to see him as the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz. Or maybe Batman. I've always liked him better than Superman or Spider-man anyway. The batmobile might've had a thing or two to do with it.
I've tried explaining it to him a couple of times, but he doesn't know who or what the things are he'd be dressing up as. Well, I did explain the history of Halloween which he understood. People dressing up to scare away the devils and demons. I said that everyone should have known to dress up as him as the Destroyer. My son is just a boy and already the demons here fear him.
He's also never had anything close to candy. God. I can imagine Connor's first experience with sugar. How funny would that be? When we get back, I'll definately take Connor trick-or-treating and I'll be damned if he isn't the kid with the most candy in the neighborhood.
