Connor took his first steps early. Or at least that's how I've always remembered it. Even being here and having no real definite concept of how many days, months, or years have gone by since jumping through that portal, I've always thought that Connor picked up on certain things a lot earlier than most. Maybe it's because he has special abilities that other kids don't or that he's been forced to grow up a lot faster than others because of where we are. It was years ago, but still a day I'll never forget as long as I live.
Most of the time, I had to make sure he wasn't off crawling somewhere he shouldn't be cause let's face it -- he's fast. Who ever thought that a baby not even a year old could move that fast is beyond me. So, I always had to make sure to keep a close eye on him whenever we were sitting around making food or resting or whatever else.
I was building a fire to cook something to eat. It's hard to find things for a baby to eat in a place like this, but there were a couple different species I found who's meat was much softer than others and could be made into something Connor was able to eat. I was preparing the meat to be placed above the flame when I looked over to where I'd last seen Connor and he was gone. Naturally, I panicked at first but not five seconds later, I turn around to see him standing there with a makeshift knife in his hand and holding it up for me to take.
"Daddy, cut," he said. Or that's what it sounded like at the time anyway. When I didn't take the knife right at first he stepped towards me and held it up higher.
And that's always going to be what I remember as Connor's first steps.
