another thing I did not know until I did a bit of research on th upcoming el jay election (which begins th day after tomorrow in
lj_election_en) is that one of th people I'm running against is
Tron Guy. Yes, not somebody pretending to be Tron Guy, but actual Tron Guy, whose el jay handle is
jmaynard. From a political perspective, it might be unwise for me to point this out, as even some of my closest friends might find voting for Tron Guy irresistible. It is best, though, to campaign fearlessly and truthfully. If el jay's citizens should decide in their hearts that Tron Guy's their guy, I'll step aside like Betty and let love, democracy, and Veronica rule.
There are 22 candidates as of when I checked this a.m., and el jay HQ sent us all a set of four questions to help clarify our positions:
Q: What do you think is the value of LJ?
As far as I'm aware, this is th Internet's premier location for informal public conversation.
popartagenda astutely put it this way:
the balance is just different. there [wordpress, typepad, blogspot, etc.] it's like provide info for the sake of it & here [el jay] it's like open a dialogue. solipsistic vs. conversational
Unlike w/ th major social networking sites, el jay's strong sense of virtual (non-face-to-face-based) community and its minimal reliance on prefabricated structure has encouraged real creativity. It realizes an ideal much sought after in other social arenas, both in person and online, but rarely found: bonds formed mostly by putting one word after another.
Q: What changes would you like to see LJ make in the next year?
Th organization has taken a lot of criticism since it went corporate in 2005, and especially since it got sold to a Russian media company in late 2007. This will sound a little vague, but it's my truest and most succinct response: I would like to see el jay win back th love of its users. I would like to see el jay get loved. If anybody needs me to define love, holla, let's talk about it.
Q: Why do you want to be the elected representative?
Q: What do you think are the community's greatest concerns?
6. development (or lack thereof) of a collective thicker skin
5. disconnect between Russian management and U.S. users
4. lack of photo-tagging feature (!!)
3. trigger-happy suspension of user accounts for lame reasons (see Number 6)
2. "feeding" of "
bad wolf"
1. users jumping ship to play Scrabulous on Facebook
"To lose love," said David Lynch, "is like light and it's only a problem when there's an absence of it. Pure love asks for nothing back and it's more like a sensation or a vibration, but unfortunately most people don't understand pure love. We tend to put the responsibility onto another person and that doesn't work out too good." In summary, thank you for vibrating in 2008.
