Don't feel bad that Gary Sinise didn't get to go to the moon in Apollo 13 -- he reached Mars in Mission to Mars, and the aliens let him stay with them forever. That is an allegory, I promise.
should i stay or should i golostcosmonautDecember 8 2012, 12:34:50 UTC
an interesting but totally predictable thing that I found out during my research was that Buzz Aldrin claimed that th main thing that fucked him up was that he thought he shoulda been first instead of Armstrong -- typical jock drive, though it also makes him look like a bit of a pussy. Michael Collins, who stayed on th ship, doesn't appear to have suffered from th same self-loathing. Ain't seen Apollo 13, but yeah it musta been th biggest blue balls in history to go a quarter million miles and not get to take one small step. You're right, though, walking on Earth moon is a purely Earth-centric concern. Th Martians don't give a hot damn
I was wondering the other day how deeply psychological "the men upstairs" might be. Little things do change human psychology, after all, and what would it actually be like for us if some of us were on the moon? What kind of race do we become, perhaps a human race? Being the human race might not be good policy at this time.
Maybe that's the essence of Nerddom, being of the human species. Just look at the Revenge of the Nerds. They were all different kinds.
Dunno if I buy that th moon changed all of its visitors for th better -- Aldrin's still a "square motherfucker", after all -- but it had to have changed them deeply on some levels ...... right? Th thing is, we're dealing w/ such a small and homogeneous sample: 24, 12, and 6 American white men. If you or I went to th moon ... if going to th moon didn't involve becoming a world-famous person ... if we could live on th moon for a year ...... There are a lot of potential reality changers in those ifs
>Being the human race might not be good policy at this time.
I agree w/ you, I think. Nerds in movies are united by being victimized; nerddom as a model of species unity depends on revenge for motivation. It's probably not sustainable
