What the hell do people not understand about putting down payments on costume commissions!?!? No, I will not start on your costume if you haven't paid me. Because in the end if I make it out of my own pocket expecting to be reimbursed and you don't, that's money out of my pocket plus precious hours of my life that I want back. Time = money...DUH

It depends on the costume and what accessories you want, honestly. I use alternate materials sometimes too depending on the prices people are willing to pay for quality. I guess an example would be a Sephiroth costume that's on my to do list. I'm charging $150 for it since the main materials I'm using on the trenchcoat are vinyl and maybe a common material for lining, but it could be as much as $500 if I used say, real leather and some type of silk or satin.
