she looks right at you and bolts

I'm pretty sure anyone who knows me and happened to read either of these stories will not be surprised, but...

For Yuletide this year I wrote If I Only Had a Heart, pre-canon Kate/Justin from Fairly Legal, and I also wrote Someone You Don't Know, a fairy tale-infused Yuletide Madness fic inspired by The Airborne Toxic Event's "Sometime Around ( Read more... )

When the day comes that I receive you as a Yuletide recipient, I'm afraid I'm just going to have to tell you right up front. When you hear NO YOU CAN'T BETA MY YULETIDE FIC THIS YEAR you'll know why. (Fortunately, I always end up writing more than one so I'll be able to punt that way, and did you notice how this year I totally sidestepped any discussion on that fic for The Killing? I suppose I could always just fess up ( ... )

Yeah, I noticed. I came out and said I knew it was you, which I haven't in other years, but you moved right past that like you were getting paid to do it. I wasn't fooled, but if you're getting paid to ignore stuff I'd like in on that action ( ... )

I'd like to get paid to ignore stuff too. That'd be HOT. I'd make more at that than I have at massage for the past ten years.

First-person... fuck. I'm so used to using a wide variety of POVs, I like to just go with whatever seems most useful in the moment. Different characters demand different ways of storytelling. I couldn't not go with it for Claire, because he's got his head so far up his own ass anyway he doesn't even think there are other real people so it made sense. I started the Amanda one in third-person, but it turns out the recipient liked the first-person POV in that so phew, right?

The thing about Yuletide is that all these fics are gifts. I don't usually go around feeling entitled about the gifts people give me. I would never complain about POV in a gift fic. I'd just be thankful as fuck that someone actually wrote me something.

Here. Have Dave Grohl.

Well, like I said, I think everyone should just write whatever point-of-view they want. I write whatever POV feels right at the time. And whatever tense feels right, for that matter.
