Julia has an evaluation tomorrow morning with Early Intervention. Her doctor had some concerns at her 18 month appointment, mainly about her speech but also a few other things so she thought it would be a good idea to refer her to CDS for some screening, and I agreed ( Read more... )

My niece didn't really talk much at all until she was at least two; certainly she didn't have six words in her vocabulary! I don't think you should 100% worry, I'm sure she'll come into her own in time, but at the same time be cautious. Kids develop at different rates :) (What am I doing giving kid advice to a mother when I'm barely even considering having kids myself?!)

I know what you mean, my nephew was also a very late talker and he's a perfectly normal intelligent 11 year old now.

And advice is welcome- it always helps to hear other perspectives!

My youngest brother had a speech impediment when he was younger and couldn't pronounce my name, he used to call me "Ma-yi-ya" (Maria)He used to have the most spectacular tantrums, refused to settle at night unless someone was in the room (a master escape artist), and you could guarantee that if there was something going on then he would be in the center of it causing all sorts of extra problems! According to mum he fell just outside of the normal milestones, but that didn't appear to stop him.

He's now a happily married man has three kids of his own and is a head chef, who has even been head hunted on a couple of occasions.

You're right, as long as she's happy. Most kids learn at their own rate anyway and if they're entertained by something then they're more likely want to learn about it :)

It's encouraging to hear about others having these kinds of issues and growing out of them. Hopefully Jules will do the same and not have to deal with this stuff for too long :)
