[In the plaza, not far from the med clinic, is a table with a Grune behind it. Her cheerful red-and-white checked picnic blanket covers the table, and there's a pitcher of the first lilacs of the season in one corner. Grune has taken a page from Elicia's book and has baked a cake to be shared with everyone returning from the draft ( Read more... )

[...there's a booth in the plaza.

Booths have been good to Giles recently. And he needs some good right now. He is both a returning draftee, downright miserable, and a lover of cake.

So, have a customer, Grune. A customer who's sight has returned just enough to see that here is a very colorful thing sitting on the blanket, a colorful thing with very large words.]

...cake?

[Her first visitor!]

Oh, yes! Would you like some?

Very much so, if that's all right.

...what's the occasion?

[She picks up a knife and starts cutting him a piece. A corner piece with extra icing, even!]

It's to welcome everyone home, of course! [Grune has been told a...highly edited version of what the draft is about, so don't be surprised if she comes out with some slightly odd things, Giles.]

[It takes her a while, but eventually she notices the large staring man. As soon as she does, her face lights up and she waves.] Dhaos! Welcome home!

[As soon as he starts coming over, she cuts him a piece of cake.] I baked everyone a cake. Here!

[Not taking it is not an option. :|]

[After a while, Fenimore comes by to make sure things are still in one piece. ...Other than the cake, of course. That's meant to be in more than one piece.]

How's business? [She should know better than to try jokes that can be taken literally with Grune.]

[Seeing Fenimore approach, Grune automatically begins cutting a piece of cake.]

Oh, I'm not selling anything. But would you like some cake?

[That nearly gets a laugh out of her -- she should have known -- but it's restrained to just a short, amused sound.]

I meant whether people were taking the offer. ...Sure, though.

Yes, I've already seen Giles and Dhaos. Giles really liked the cake. [Dhaos, on the other hand, is food-phobic.

She holds out the piece for Fenimore to take.]

[He hadn't exactly wanted to return back to his own house right away after the draft, so as soon as it was light enough he left house 25 and entered the plaza.

Of course, he wasn't exactly expecting to find a table, cake, and flowers. Upon further inspection, he realizes why he wasn't expecting it. Merlin, you are the weirdest girl he's ever met.]

...Grune, what exactly do you think you're doing?

[She gives him a big smile. Another one of her friends!] Oh, I'm welcoming everyone home! Would you like some cake?

[Just. Staring.] You think that cake's large enough for everyone who was just absent?

[She gives the cake a puzzled look.] Do you think I should have made another?
