Preparedness has been on my mind a lot recently, not only because of where I work, but also because of the hurricane that threatened the east coast last week, the impending birthday of Baby Ninjapants WK, and now mr_orgue's recent post about preparedness in response to the NZ earthquake ( Read more... )

This may be a stupid question, but I honestly don't know how to store water in those quantities in my house. We both had issues with the water suitcases leaking - do gallon jugs do any better?

Not a stupid question. The gallon jugs don't necessarily keep any better. The leaking issue and space restrictions are why I don't currently keep a water supply. I have some ideas, though, which I'll share in an upcoming post.

Check with the Mormons. Seriously! They're encouraged to keep a year's supply of food and water at all times.

Nice one. I'll do my best to remember to check in with you at the end of the month too. The more people we have reminding each other (and feeling guilty about letting others down), the more likely it is we'll get it done.

How much liquor does one require for disaster preparedness?

Good question, Jameel. The amount of liquor required depends on how you react during an emergency. I always keep ~2 six-packs of beer chilled and 2+ cases of beer (homebrew) stored, plus ingredients for at least one batch on hand in case I need to brew more. I try to have 2-3 whiskeys on hand at all times (a variety that may include scotch, irish, bourbon, or rye). In the winter I also keep a stock of Irish cream - great for porridge and hot cocoa. Wine can come in handy - I kept a bottle of wine in my work preparedness kit for a long time. I need to restock that. Any other booze I have - rum, gin, vodka, sake, prosecco, grappa, etc - is also good in a pinch.
