I just finished Breaking Dawn. Yes, I wanted to get over this 754 pages monster of a book as fast as possible. (mainly to get back to studying my maths and not getting spoiled, but shush.)
if you don't want to be spoiled with the book, don't click under the cut, tyvm.
Oh, well. Let's do this by points. I want this review to be organized so that I can keep up with myself.
1) I don't really know what to think of it. I think it was unbearably long for nothing - a little like Deathly Hallows, for the whole 'camping' part... except worst. I mean, the whole pregnant!Bella thing... it lasted for what? A few weeks? Then, was it absolutely necessary to make it last near 300 pages? It was long for no particular reason and stupid.
2) THE CHARACTERS
Now, this is an extremely weird point to talk about badly for me when it comes to the Twilight series. Because, even though Stephenie Meyer is not an excellent writer, the strong point of her books are usually the characters, how they are pretty well built and the way we care about them almost no matter what is about to happen. In this book... this did NOT happen. Most characters were extremely OOC (= out of character) and acting weirdly for reasons that I still don't understand. Of course, I thought some characters were still being excellent.
edward
I will be extremely surprised if all the blind fangirls who are like "OMGEDWARDHASLIKENOFLAWSHEISPERFECTINEVERYWAY!" still think the same after Breaking Dawn. Some people really did not like him in Eclipse (or, at the very least, were able to see that YES, he did have flaws), but damn, in this book, I felt BAD for him. HE WAS SO OOC, IT WAS PRACTICALLY UNBEARABLE. Edward is not my favourite character. I do adore him, but I'm able to see his flaws very well. But there were LOTS of times in this book when I just wanted to scream "wtf, asshole, what are you doing?". I think he got a lot better about 200 pages before the ending. But the way he treated the 'baby' before he could hear his thoughts and figure out that it loved Bella even though it was hurting her? Ugh. Did not like. At all. All the same, I can understand where he comes from. If you were able to watch your loved one go through the same things Bella had to go through during pregnancy... ugh. I still love him, but I'm beyond pissed at how badly SMeyer wrote him.
jacob
You guys know how much I love the guy. Even though I think the whole imprinting thing was pretty awful, I still love the guy. His part of the book was by far the most entertaining (besides the ending, even though I easily saw it coming, but we'll talk about that later) and I just love him more. Also... Edward. was. right. Werewolves are extremely volatile creatures. Of course, he's dealing with a lot, etc, but Jesus Christ, his emotions were ALL OVER THE PLACE. I never saw him as a treath to Bella's life, but after this book, I think he was just as dangerous as Edward was.
rosalie
Ugh, how I hate this part. I used to adore Rosalie. But the was she was during Bella's pregnancy was AWFUL. She was okay during the rest of the book, though. And I know that she wants a child and everything, but I don't think that she would have just stared at Bella dying because of that thing. Extremely OOC, almost just as much as Edward's character. Sad.
seth
I THINK SETH IS THE CUTEST THING IN THE WHOLE WORLD. DON'T EVEN ARGUE WITH ME. THE KID IS ADORABLE. END OF DISCUSSION.
tanya
I AM SO GLAD THAT SHE WASN'T A COMPLETE BITCH. I thought she was one of the nicest, genuine people in the book. And I really liked her. A lot lot lot.
leah
Oh, Leah. There was this one point where I really though her and Jacob would sex up or something. It would have been the right thing to do, imo. But Jacob had to imprint. (.___________.) I found the part where she explained how there was no way she'd be able to have children HEARTWRENCHING. Of course, she's a bitch, but I still care for the girl. She's nice enough.
bella
I really tried to like her, but I couldn't. I always thought that fanfictions where Bella had a nice strenght towards blood as a newborn were unbelievable. And this was unbelievable, too. She was, overall, too 'perfect' (aka perfect control (for a newborn), perfect power, 'perfect' daughter, perfect friends, perfect family, perfect etc...) and it bugged me to no end. I really hoped that this book would change my opinion of her, but it didn't. Also: the way she handled pregnancy was absolutely awful. But, surprisingly, she did seem like a notsobad mom. But still... ugh.
alice
It broke my heart when she got away. Broke it. I saw it coming from the moment she told Edward she had glimpses of visions only. I thought she was lying to go away on some secret mission to help them get out of that tricky situation, and of course, I was right. I knew that she would come back before the fight could happen, but at the moment she got back, when Edward said her name, I was like "OMGALICEJASPERAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!". Definately one of the highlights. Even though their coming back sucked.
emmett
OH JESUS, THE ARM-WRESTLING MATCH. MADE ME LAUGH. THANK YOU EMMETT FOR YOUR VARIUS FUNNY COMMENTS, YOU MADE THE BOOK A LITTLE MORE LIGHT FOR ME.
carlisle&esme
As interesting and cute as always. I've got nothing to say.
jasper
I thought he'd be more important, I really had hope. Guess I was wrong. Well, still, everytime he said something or simply was there, I liked him more than anyone else. Also, I'm mad at SMeyer for making it seem like only Alice was missing while BOTH of them were gone. I mean, what the fuck? I know Alice is more important as a character, but please. Jasper is just as important as she is to the FAMILY.
volturi
Eh. I was expecting so much more. Deceiving.
eleazar
LOVED HIM. HE'S SO SUBTLE AND INTERESTING. LOVED HIM.
kate
Loved the girl as well. She was so twisted in a good way. Loved her.
I won't talk about all the other newcomers much. I thought they were nice enough and some reactions made me smile/laugh, so it was all good about that.
3) PAIRINGS TIME!
edward/bella
Eh. Okay, thanks we got used to it. Bye.
jacob/leah
FUCKING. LOVE. I STILL WISH THEY HAD FUCKED OR SOMETHING. THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN NIIIICE.
jacob/bella
Oh, yes, because it still exists. I'M SO MAD. Because if she would have chosen him in New Moon or Eclipse... we now KNOW for sure that he would have never imprinted. And I'm mad. Because they were good for each other.
jacob/nessie
Don't want to talk about it. Don't.
kate/garrett
LOVED IT. SO CUTE. LOVED IT.
4) NESSIE/RENESMEE/MONSTER/WHATEVERYOUCALLIT
I thought that, once born, the girl was adorable. I love how she communicated. It was adorable and she was lovely and everything. BUT. I didn't like the fact that, at the end, Edward and Bella were talking about her future love life when she still has some years. It's like "well, do you prefer Jacob or that other half-vamp dude with her?" and I was like "WTF, STFU!"
conclusion?
J.K. Rowling once said that "something very magical can happen when you read a good book."
Did something magical happen there? Not at all.
Is the book worth all the hype? Definately not.
Am I going to re-read again? Probably not, except maybe some parts.
Did I like it? ...still unsure about that. Some parts were really good, but most of it sucked badly. Like I thought it would be, it's like really bad fanfiction. There are like... 3-4 good things about it, but the rest is fail and it sucks.
breaking dawn or breaking fail?
Still can't decide...
Well, this is it. Now, SMeyer, bring on Midnight Sun and make it better than this! :)
Be prepared for spoilers in the comments as well, too.
PS. I'm making this a public post. It's funnier that way.
