Congratulations, President-elect Obama

Nov 05, 2008 16:12

The election did not go the way I had hoped, but that doesn't mean I'm not proud to be an American. It's a historic moment, and I wish Mr. Obama the best, because I wish America the best.

I urge all Americans who supported me to join me in not just congratulating him, but offering our next president our good will and earnest effort to find ways ( Read more... )

John McCain's speech rocked. I've always liked him, and if he had run against a candidate that I didn't like, he probably would have gotten my vote.

I voted for Bill Clinton in 1992 but didn't vote for him again in 1996, but looking back on it, I'm not a bit sorry he won re-election. I hope that the people who didn't vote for Obama, also end up with no regrets that he won--I hope he's that kind of President. I don't think he'll be able to keep all his campaign promises just because of the way the economy is, but I think he's going to be one of the better Presidents we've ever had.

What did you think of our gubernatorial and senate races?

I was basically in a "throw the bums out" kind of mentality when it came to the state races. I voted for McCrory and Hagen. I also voted for Ty Cobb over Mel Watt. Don't even get me started on the shape of our Congressional district - it's the most fucking gerrymandered thing I have ever seen.

Living in a state where we have one Congressman, I find congressional districts to be quite fascinating, so I'm curious; what's so fucked up about your district?

Here's map of the 12th District. Basically, it winds its way about 120 miles through the middle of NC, taking in all the urban areas from Charlotte to Greensboro. It's a skinny district, gerrymandered by the General Assembly specifically to be a non-competitive Democratic district. It splits right the 6th District in two. Districts by law are supposed to be contiguous, but I read somewhere that the point where the two halves of the 6th District connect is invisible to the naked eye. :p

I'm not sure where in Charlotte Tracy lives, but it's quite likely that we live 80+ miles apart and have the same Congressman. I'd like to see Winston incorporated into the 5th District. It's better geographic fit, there are more commonality of interests, and with Winston in the district, the Democrats could finally unseat Virginia Foxx.

I'd probably feel more charitable about the election if I wasn't going to have to live with the results on (literally) a day to day basis. I was even starting to feel a little bit better...

Until the news yesterday that John Kerry is pushing really hard to be named Secretary of State. *HORRIFIED* PLEASE DON'T MAKE ME WORK FOR JOHN KERRY!!!!!!!

Hmm...looking at the HuffPo list of possibilities, so far I'm okay. I like Chuck Hagel, and I'm okay with him or Colin Powell as SecDef. I'd rather see Bill Richardson than John Kerry as SecState. The only thing I know about Summers is that NOW hates him, and that makes him all right with me. :p I don't know enough about the rest of them yet to make a judgment.
