How were we supposed to know you don't like the books? If you didn't mention it in your application and faked it well enough, it might have slipped by.
You know, I don't spend hours poring over every damn application in this community. When I read an application I'm looking for depth of expression, facile use of words, and appropriate detail in answers. That's all. I don't have the time or energy to analyze every friggin' word to see if the person really is a "true" fan. Besides, that's not the purpose of this community--we want people who love LOTR on a deeper level than "omg legolas iz so HAWT!!1!" If you're a movie fan and were able to use examples from them (most of which are *SURPRISE* in the books as well) in a sufficient way to tell us that you know an ent from a hole in the ground, that's probably why you were accepted. Not because you pulled off some lame magic trick.
You weren't trying to trick anyone, you applied, you got accepted. Big deal, you know? We're not an 'elite' community, we just screen the fangirls and fanboys who are too immature to look past appearances and realise that there's a plot to that eleven hours of boys playing with WETA toys, ya know?
If you're going to start making a big deal of things instead of accepting the spirit of the community, do you think we really want you?
I am only going to respond once more to this. Really I'm not into this whole snarking and wanking thing.
It was NOT my intention to upset anyone, and I NEVER tried to trick anybody. Nor was it my intention to be accepted. I AM a fangirl. Nothing more. I joined because I honestly thought I would be rejected and filling out the application and seeing the rejections would have wasted some time. That's what I do when I'm bored. I fill out applications to stretch my writing skills.
I AM leaving the comm, once I figure out that whole process. I'm rather new to this LJ thing myself and a few things are beyond me.
So everyone just calm down. Although I still suggest you review your voting process.
Well, I say, "Bravo". I find it highly amusing that such a snafu occurred. Please encourage your friend to apply again, if she really wants to be in this community. As for your application, I personally didn't vote on it, but I would have said no. So, yay me!
I think I'd like to friend you, if that's alright. I thoroughly enjoyed your post; it made me giggle (in a non-fangirl-ish way). :)
I just read your app and I would not have accepted you. You're answers seem generic to me. Not anything against you, I just wouldn't have said yes.
As I expressed to your friend who also got rejected, we want details. We want to know that you know the books and the movies. And then we want you to be able to give us your thoughts and opinions on them coherently.
How many true fans have been rejected because they cannot write essays? I don't know, but a majority of the people rejected are rejected because they cannot spell, use bad grammar (I don't need perfect grammar, just...good) or don't answer entire questions/give good explanations, like your friend.
And I wouldn't mind you staying, though I understand if you want to leave. We're not all that active, anyway, and humor/other perspectives is always a good thing.
But whatever. I'm just a lurker. And one who didn't even read your application, which I will go do now.
Personally I am only a fan of the LOTR movies. The books bored me senseless (all except for The Two Towers which I genuinely tolerated/liked). >.< They were soulless in my opinion but I can understand why some people would really love them. Plus I am not really a community-type person. I just like trying to join them to waste my off days, but I really have the attention span of a gnat and could never contribute.
I go through stages, really. At the moment the books seem incredibly boring and I'm quite happy with the movies. A few months ago I might have had a different opinion. (Though I've always found the Frodo&Sam centric parts of TT and RotK to be so. incredibly. dull.) And I skimmed a lot, too.
Aww, pity. Your post made me giggle. And I think I would probably have accepted you, too. =P

You get no love from me with your insinuations.

And obviously if you applied to a community where you KNOW you don't care for the subject matter at hand, you were.

Didn't I sound like a movie fan in my app? I thought so. I wouldn't have voted no on me too.

I was geniunely startled when people started voting yes for me, actually. It threw me for a loop. *L* I'm not elite material usually.
Oh! And thank you to everyone who did vote yes. >.< I did appreciate that I wasn't torn apart for my rather vague knowledge of LOTR.
