I can see this exchange very well. How Arvedui's son must have felt he was repeating it when he would not accept the title of King after the flight of the Witch-king. Poor Elrond! But he was right, I think.

You create such a vivid picture of the scene in just a few details. The line about the burns on Elrond's arm was very effective -- physical pain to echo the emotional pain, and ever-present to constantly remind Elrond of his grief.
