Why is it easier to share the intimate details of one's life with total strangers than to share them with those we are closest to?

Because we cannot see a stranger's face (I assume you mean online)
when we share those dark parts of our lives.

With what I've been going through lately, it's been a
hell of a lot easier to talk to someone I know via only the internet
then someone face to face who keeps asking those same stupid questions.
