It is nice that they moved the Asheville tournament up a few weeks so that we could see the foliage, which was beautiful, and the weather was great. I love Asheville. Unfortunately, I stayed for 2 nights at the Days Inn Asheville ( Read more... )

Actually, Heather and I both volunteered to play in Division 1. Then just a couple of days before the tournament, after Wallace and Robin signed up, Bill bumped us down. I was bummed out; I love to play in Division 1. It is just more interesting, fun and I learn new words. I get all psyched up and play better. I haven't won any money but I haven't finished in last place either.

Ruchi made those big scores with plays such as PIETA (42), BABE (46), and MITERS (40). It seems like she just got the right tiles at the right time and of course found the good plays. (And she found them lightning fast.) With NIX (38), she hit a hot spot for the X. There is no doubt my defensive game could be better. When I was <1300, I had a certain blindness to how my play created hot spots and opportunities for my opponent. Now I am better at foreseeing these things, but could still improve. When I start uploading games, it will be good to get some critical feedback.

Holy cow, I see they just double RR'd D1. No KOTH or Gibsonization necessary apparently. Looks like they also wanted to keep D2 as a RR/1 KOTH setup as well. Yeah, that's awful, if Liz and Heather offered to play D1 before they got the final two entries, they should be allowed to stay up if they desire, as a thank you for saving the directors' bacon to begin with. I won't scream laziness as I know putting on a tourney is hard work...but there's nothing wrong with doing a single RR for divisions of 10 and 12, followed by Swiss/KOTH'ing the thing to the end, and it shouldn't hold up the tournament that much. Splitting any division across multiple rooms is certainly unideal (ALIUNDE) as well, but I'm unaware of what they had to work with ( ... )

Yes, I think I should have opened sooner in the game with Mark. The timing of opening and closing the board seems to be something of an art, and one I have not mastered. When to open is obvious when you are behind, but not so obvious when the score is even. When to close it is an even harder decision for me. When I am ahead by 30? By 60? Sometimes when I am ahead by >100, I don't want to close it at all! I am having so much fun scoring, I just want to run with it and score even more points.
