Two weeks ago I found out a really good friend is dying of lung cancer. I have been completely preoccupied with her and her situation ever since. No surprise. It sucks, its not fair, it does ever become fair. My grandmother died from pancreatic cancer. I went through the stages pretty quick. I work in health care, at Kaiser no less, I knew the diagnosis and I knew the outcome.
The next step I believe is acceptance. But don't worry too much about the rest of it. Breathe, take care of yourself and share as much time with your friend as you can.
