Oh gods, I Sooooo understand the 85% Hispanic and what are we known for? Oranges.. the orange fields here used to stretch all across this valley. Now there are just a few places left here and there that have orchards. Laughs, and the original tree. The original Orange tree that was planted here is a historical monument and protected...although how the smog hasn't killed it yet as its in downtown Riverside I have no idea ( ... )

I had no idea Riverside was known for oranges. Go figure. But I feel sorry for that poor, lonely orange tree.

The orange trees next to my parents' housing tract was recently bulldozed to make way for more houses. Joy. I've been trying to take before and after pictures of all the fields turning to houses in the area. But they're building too fast for me to keep up. It's really a shame. Pretty soon we'll be paying astronomical prices for food, just like....uhm....New York. And you can forgot the roadside fruit stands. Which are the only places you can get truly fresh fruit and vegetables. We have been spoiled for so long. And I really hate to see us selling out for the quick buck.

Yes, I live in California! Ventura County is about 60 miles north of Los Angeles. Right on the coast. We can (almost) walk to the beach from our house, which is lovely. And the seabreeze keeps the temperature at right around 70 all the time. Well, in Oxnard, anyway. Spoiled again.
