Thanks to the wonders of YouTube I've been able to watch the season 3 opener of Robin Hood.
Good points:
Tuck for the win.
The return of Sir Jasper and his awesome scarlet cape.
The Tuck-Robin and Tuck-Gisborne and Tuck-Gang scenes - well, every scene Tuck is in basically. “Do you want some of that?” “Erm...nah...bad arm.”
Allan’s back in outlaw clothes and looking damn fine. He’s the only one not to trust Tuck. I‘d love to see those two play some poker.
Tuck’s sneaky plan - to force Robin’s hand by getting the gang captured. Risky, and it paid off. It will be interesting to see the fallout when one of his plans doesn’t work.
The latest cracktastic method of execution - not dull, indeed. Hee.
Sir Jasper and the Sheriff trying to out-camp each other.
Bad points:
The return of asshole!Robin.
They still haven’t gotten rid of the stupid ‘Deep in the heart of England’ and eye opening credits.
Guy’s hair is long, Robin’s hair is short and it makes both make them look rather unattractive.
The ‘epic battle’ between Guy and Robin was...not so epic. These are two men who once punched on each other for ten hours in the forest but now Guy makes a run for it with a small child and Robin gives up the first time he goes down?
The Beeb props department obviously lost both Marian’s ‘engagement’ and ‘wedding’ rings, because while the other two were just as ugly as the one shown, neither of them were purple.
Robin’s apology was a little half-assed. How many times is the whole “I didn’t mean the things I said” going to work, anyway?
Random Thoughts
The cave where Tuck was tending to Robin is the same cave where Marian ‘died’ in the first season. A nice poignancy or laziness on behalf of the location scout?
“Did I kill him?” No, Robin. He tripped you and you gave up without a fight.
The cross tattoo on Robin’s arm - something we’ll see an explanation for later in the season perhaps?
Do they deliberately pick on Much for some torture because they know it will upset us the most? Ugh, branding. What a great scream from Sam Troughton there, though.
How the hell did Little John get up that tree?!?
“Was that nasty Robin Hood horrible to our little Guy? Oh, Diddums.” Hee! Guy’s emo was a little tedious, I think. He’s much better when he’s arch and flinging off a cape with flourish and smirking.
Overall I liked it - I still miss Djaq and Marian (and Will I suppose), but now that the show has gone off in this direction I’m willing to give it a chance. Even feisty!Kate - although even in the preview she seems like a poor imitation of the former two awesome females. Although I'm hoping for a return to the crack and camp a bit more next week.
But Tuck! They could rename the show ‘Brother Tuck’ and I would watch.
