I see that the issue of women in the Defence Force has reared its head again.

As I understand it, it's because men are culturally geared to protect women. The idea of going into battle with a woman drives them crazy 'cause the idea's in the back of their head that they're supposed to keep women safe.

At least, that's how ex-military folks have explained it to me. Modern concepts of equality are at war with their sense of chivalry, basically.

Yeah, I guess I do sort of see the mentality in that perspective.

But I honestly thought maybe we'd moved past that and wonder why it should be a women's responsibility to abstain from duty just because a man might be upset/uncomfortable - surely basic training/bonding with the unit would get them past that?

And from the reports coming out of our Defence Force, at least, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of chivalry going on anyway...
