I see that the issue of women in the Defence Force has reared its head again.

Honestly, the sexism in this country surprises me sometimes.  This is not an issue of "feminists kicking up a fuss" - no one is demanding affirmative action, or that women be placed on the front lines for the hell of it.  It is the mere suggestion that if a woman is

As I understand it, it's because men are culturally geared to protect women. The idea of going into battle with a woman drives them crazy 'cause the idea's in the back of their head that they're supposed to keep women safe.

At least, that's how ex-military folks have explained it to me. Modern concepts of equality are at war with their sense of chivalry, basically.

Yeah, I guess I do sort of see the mentality in that perspective.

But I honestly thought maybe we'd moved past that and wonder why it should be a women's responsibility to abstain from duty just because a man might be upset/uncomfortable - surely basic training/bonding with the unit would get them past that?

And from the reports coming out of our Defence Force, at least, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of chivalry going on anyway...
