Character name: Lien Kha
Fandom: Original
Timeline: Taken after her trip to Japan
Age: 17
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths:
♬ Psychometry- This is Lien's most notable ESP ability where she is able to touch any object or person and receive all the information about them and their origins. She can control this power so she doesn't constantly get an overflow of information into her head. For example, if she touched a person, she could find out their age, what they're thinking currently, and their past actions. If she touched an object she would know its composition and sense memories and the past associated with it. This is an especially useful ability when it comes to picking up a weapon she's never used before and provided it's been used by another person, she can learn how to wield said weapon almost immediately. She can presumably pick up on how to speak a foreign language in this manner as well. Lien usually gets rid of or pushes back the knowledge she gains from psychometry by sleep so her brain doesn't explode since there's only so much she can keep in her head all at once.
♬ Telekinesis- Lien has the ability to move objects with her mind although this power is not as potent. She can move small to moderately heavy objects such as people, but that's pretty much the extent of her telekinesis unless she puts extra effort into it.
♬ Sixth Sense- Well, as an esper she's obviously sensitive to the supernatural and she WILL know if something strange is afoot even if she can't always see it. She describes her sixth sense as a 'ticklish' or even aching feeling in her head
♬ Weaknesses- If she uses too much of her psychometry, she tires out very easily and tends to take very long naps or deep slumbers to drain out newly acquired information. In a way this shows that she doesn't retain information well, at least not immediately. (She always keeps knowledge about people she just met in the back of her head though). One would think she would have a genius intellect, but that's far from it. Her intelligence is pretty good though, she's just not a genius even if she can get answers with her powers.
As for the rest, Lien is physically fit from traveling and practicing martial arts and the girl can sprint very quickly if she needs to.
How would they use their abilities?: Lien would definitely use her powers to help others and to just learn how to do a job quickly so she doesn't have to be trained unless it's for a long period of time. She'll also use psychometry to get information about a place, person, and/or thing so it might help when collecting info that others want.
She might use her telekinesis... To help move things. Not seeing much use of it yet though.
Appearance:
Lien is slender and not very curvy. In fact, she's kind of skinny. And short. Her eyes are bright blue and seem to have an eerie quality to them, most likely because of her being an esper. Lien's hair is dark and shaggy. She usually wears very casual clothes wearing little to no dresses or skirts. The most feminine clothing she'll wear are shorts paired with a cute girly top.
Background/Personality:
Lien Kha is a young woman from a world based on our modern times, but with magic users, mysterious and mythological creatures, and espers. Lien originates from South Vietnam and born in a small, but efficiently run community that was hidden away from the city for a specific reason. The community was run by espers, or humans with psychic powers.
In Lien's world, psychics are scattered and hidden away from normal society and only top government agencies around the world are usually aware of them and employ their services. Psychics usually have a longer lifespan than normal people, but by no means are they immortal. Historically, they flock into groups to be with those who are the same as them and tend to avoid integrating with normal people although there has been a recent trend in modern times of psychics losing their sense of camaraderie with their fellow espers and independently going out on their own and mixing with the outside world.
Lien is one of those drifting espers although she has her own special reason for doing so. In the Vietnamese esper community, there is one individual above all psychics in the world who is the most powerful due to her powerful and numerous esper abilities. This woman was named Phuong or aka "Mother" whose body was preserved after her death by the Vietnamese esper group so they could use her DNA to produce children who would share her powers and continue the line of psychics. Some of the esper children shared some of Phuong's genes specifically for her powers, but there were a special few who were made to be EXACTLY like Phuong.
Lien was one of those few children clones produced that looked liked Phuong, but only shared a few of her abilities (psycho-meter powers and mild telekinesis). In short, she was a disappointment compared to her 'sister' clone Ai Thao who was born with a substantial amount of powers like Phuong. The fact that Lien knew that she was a clone surprisingly did not bother her as much as it might have, but she was more impacted by the fact about how Ai Thao was better than her.
Despite her shortcomings, Lien trained to refine her powers and otherwise lived a quiet life in the esper commune without paying attention to the passage of time. Everyday was basically the same for her-- training with other espers, physical exercise, studies in basic subjects and languages, chores to do around the community, and if she was lucky, some rare free time for herself or a job that required an esper's abilities was available for her.
As Lien approached her teens, she started to feel uncomfortable about being stuck in this small world of hers especially after learning and seeing so much of the outside and what it had to offer on one of her missions. She was in the city of Ho Chi Minh and was amazed by all the sights, sounds, and people and wondered why her neighbors couldn't learn to adapt to this outside world. She also began to realize how although everyone in her community was close-knit, there was an odd emotional distance among all of them which greatly frustrated her. Her only close companion was probably her sister clone Ai Thao, but since she was seen as the superior clone of Phuong, Lien had some deep-rooted frustration against her as well.
And thus, at the lovely age of thirteen, Lien left Vietnam to travel around the world to discover and enjoy its wonders. How was this managed? She has (and still does) enough money from her previous missions to fund her travels and at fifteen she began to take up an informal job as a secret detective, being able to solve cases of murder, theft, and the like (although this is with the help of her abilities rather than having a brilliant deductive mind).
Lien is also taken care of by an old friend, Jonah Reed, an elder gentlemen who used to be an agent for the American government until he also took up a life of taking trips with Lien and acts as her surrogate uncle. They have various adventures which range from silly mishaps such as a pseudo-zombie invasion (don't ask) to some heart breaking jobs such as trying to find a lost parent of a child. She never charges more than she needs for her services and is quite content with what she can get.
She tends to run into her sister clone Ai Thao at some points during her travels which doesn't really make Lien happy, but she takes her meetings with Ai Thao in stride. One encounter, however, helped patch up the gaps in their relationship and strengthening their sisterhood. Lien reunited with Ai Thao (technically Lien's first appearance since she's part of Ai Thao's main story) in England during a murder investigation at a Victorian mansion where they both worked together along with their esper companions to unravel the secrets of the mansion. Throughout the investigation, Lien was finally able to confess her bitterness towards Ai Thao and admitting her own insecurities. The two of them succeed in unmasking the murderer together and in short, reconciled. Lien is the one who convinces Ai Thao to go back to Japan and seek out the boy she loved most and travels with her to give advice and just have fun with her sister clone.
Lien, usually goes to live in an apartment in California to relax since she loves the Golden State's weather and it's the place where one can usually find her and Jonah if they want to hire them for a big job.
Lien is a girl with several layers in her character. At first glance, she looks as if she plays the part of a shy wallflower, but the reality is much different. She speaks her mind and is not afraid to stand up to someone or something she doesn't agree with. She's strange for an esper in her world because of her outspoken nature and you could call her a rebel of sorts since she is out of the norm in terms of personality and what she's willing to do to achieve what she wants. This is reflected in her non-delicate speech and actions.
This extroverted nature of hers actually makes her more friendly than it sounds. Lien's outgoing and the type of person who likes helping others even if it gets her in trouble. Let's not forget, however, that she's still a teenager at heart. She's rather sarcastic to a humorous extent. She has a habit of singing random songs when drifting off and having random bursts of spontaneity. Lien can get irritated if the right buttons are pushed. She's a hard worker and dislikes it when others lose focus.
Is she levelheaded? When a dire situation calls for it, yes. Her psychometry has revealed to her many horrific things about others, but she always keeps a positive outlook and never letting the dark knowledge get her down. Mature? For every other time, far from it. Lien is still young and impulsive after all. She loves to use her powers to observe and take in her surroundings when she actually takes a moment to sit still and appreciate the world which she couldn't do as a child in Vietnam.
Then there's the girl who is scared of being alone and unwanted. She was considered a second-rate clone of Phuong in her Vietnamese community because she didn't exhibit more than two major psychic powers. Although she was not necessarily treated unkindly, the fact is that she could feel the weight of the disappointment from others and it grew into a fear of being seen unworthy, which explains her outgoing and hard working nature which is unintentionally hiding that one insecurity. There is also a slight dislike of being outdone by others, but this isn't a dominating factor of her personality.
Why should that character be in this game: [For OCs only.]
I feel Lien should be in this game to just have fun and develop interesting CR with other characters thus making a good blend of crack and possibly drama. I think this community will probably be the first where I can use an OC actively and I'm looking forward to that.
Why do you want to continue their history here: For characters from other games only.
For applicants considering an alternate version of a character already in game, please use this as your chance to explain the key differences between your character and the one already in play:
Have you read up on how the game works?: Communication is through Flaming Ferrit and you get money by doing missions and/or leeching off yeaaaaah.
1st person sample:
[The video feed flickers for a second or two before focusing on a young girl who is surrounded by a variety of aliens. Is it a gang up or...? She seems to be placing a hand lightly on one alien and tapping her forehead with the other hand]
Hm... I think you left your basketballs in the back of one of the gyms. It was hard to tell from your memory, took a bit to dig that one out. Hope you find it! Huh? Oh, no, no need to pay! Now if it involved murder, infidelity, and/or both... Yeah, we're gonna have to talk in let's say four digits at the very least. In any case, finding lost things is easy. I do this all the time!
... Okay, so maybe I don't usually use my abilities on a spaceship that houses millions of aliens, humans, monsters, gods, et cetera. And I can't say that in my past experience I've helped an alien with lots of tentacles find his balls.
Uh. Sorry, that didn't turn out quite the way I wanted... Dammit, I'm never gonna live that one down aren't I?!
[Lien suddenly looks dizzy for a moment, but bops herself on the head to snap out of it. She breaks away from the crowd with an apologetic smile]
Ah, gotta go now guys! I still got some forms to sign and I haven't finished reading that guidebook they gave me! I got a lot to do before settling in, so I'll help you all later! Try not to get too attached to me though.
No pun intended to the alien who really was attached to my head.
3rd person sample:
It shouldn't have surprised Lien that in a spaceship that could house millions, someone was bound to have lost a personal belonging. Strange, she didn't have time to worry about the destruction of her world, her friends, and loved ones. There was a need for searching. She put herself to work right away (at the end of the day, she wished she asked for some compensation, her head was hurting like hell).
The dark haired girl was seen walking around the ship, brushing her fingers lightly on places or on other beings to coax out clues and to lead her to the prize. Her eyes glittered with a liveliness she hadn't felt in a long time. This ship, the S.S. Thor, was special. Lien didn't need any psychic power to tell her that. It was right there in front of her face waiting to be explored.
She supposed she should have felt worse. And honestly, there was a sinking feeling of realization about how she was actually alone with no one to watch over her like her uncle.
"Man...! Oh, crap my head feels like something awful!" With a deep groan, she collapsed on a seat in a restaurant massaging her head vigorously. Lien was successful in finding the last randomly lost item, but was paying for it with a headache. A smile crept across her face despite the pain. Now that she could sit down and rest, Lien began to hum a quiet tune while daydreaming about what her life would be like from now on... A life among the darkness and vastness of space.
"Twinkle, twinkle, little star,
How I wonder what you are... "
Questions?: LET ME TOUCH SOMETHING-- I mean.
Did you put your characters name and fandom in the subject: I have no fans :( But I won't forget!
Request Edit!
Lien's missions she did for her community when she was younger, required her to use her abilities to gather information for various law enforcment/government agencies or some wealthy patron from around the world (Most of the information had to do with military or market industry secrets and/or capturing/apprehending normal secret agents or other renegade espers.) Other missions include solving cases of murder or theft where evidence is particularly scarce; with Lien's abilities, she could dig out clues by piecing together memories, info, and images, she could gain from touching objects and people with her psychometry.
Lien is considered by her community as a relatively average (or weak) esper even though she is a clone of their most revered psychic. Even though she is a clone, Lien fully considers herself her own person without much regard about whom she originates from-- she realizes that she's NOT the same and not a carbon copy of Phuong because what she feels and what she experiences is different (although oddly enough, her personality is considered closest to what Phuong was like before she was deceased).
When she made her decision to leave Vietnam and the esper commune itself, the community elders gave their reluctant permission, but Lien's activities are highly monitored just in case if she ever chooses to compromise their position by revealing the hidden existence of the big esper groups (which she wouldn't ever do in normal circumstances anyways).
In regards to her surroundings, Lien honestly just likes to see places. She likes learning about where she is, what to do for fun, and meeting people. When she travels with Jonah, she'll have a habit of just buying a small souvenir or postcard as a reminder of where she's been. That or she'll just take pictures with a disposable camera.
To other people, Lien is by default pretty friendly. She isn't above teasing people she likes and is most definitely not above insulting and bickering with someone she dislikes/hates. If she REALLY likes you, she'll be affectionate and express it in hugs, head pats, or friendly punches to the arm. If Lien hate you, well, expect her to play the silent game or outbursts of anger. She likes getting to know people just like how she gets to know places. Lien's never had a love interest, probably because she sees most boys she meets or expresses an interest in her as simply friends (plus, her guardian Jonah is overprotective of her). If she ever did begin to crush on a person, she would actually settle down and become a little calmer than how she usually is and be attentive to the person she liked.
She's usually good at respecting a person's privacy and therefore doesn't usually use her psychometry to find out personal things about someone. If she wants to use it on person, she will ask permission to hold their hand and initiate her powers. If a person doesn't want her to touch them, she'll respect that unless it was for something very important or Lien wants to know something badly. Lien usually doesn't elaborate on how much she can find out about a person because she's had experiences where no normal person would touch her, afraid of what she might find out about them. For her cases as a detective though? She'll use psychometry and anything else in her abilities as a means to an end.
As mentioned above, her psychometry has shown her the darker side of humanity, but she never focuses solely on the negative of people (she has a healthy reaction to anything weird or disturbing though). It distracts her from her personal gratification of discovering and enjoying the good which she personally believes there is more of than the bad.
