Sedol Lee, Korean genius Go(baduk) player, is having a face-off with the supercomputer AlphaGo. In October last year AlphaGo has beaten Fan Hui, the Chinese Go champion, and we will see if the computer will continue its winning streak.

Yep, the superiority in go is lost to a machine.

In SF stories I've encountered empathy as a salvation to mankind in cases like this, that is, when superior artificial intelligence is just about to be done with humanity, it, or part of it, or some very powerful third party develops/steps up with empathy, and we get spared.

When it comes to real AI-s though ... I would think that their motives and ways of acting are way more alien than that, and I'm really not counting on them to develop empathy. Thankfully there still seems to be a very long way until an actual AI takeover :)

I am surprised and not surprised at the same time. Although I would have liked to see Lee's signature confidence "At least I will win" validated.

Empathy as our savior is a really good point. AlphaGo will not exterminate us at least in the near future... right? As you say, we will have to wait a long time before AI rebellion brings the fire and brimstone ending...right? X)

In the meantime, I will practice being a pet human, though I don't like to get my belly scratched :)

To change the subject, have you ever read manga called Hikaru no Go? It's really good.

Must have not felt good at all to have lost to a computer program eventually ( ... )

Yeah, it must be depressing to find that machine can defeat one thing you dedicated your life to. Not that Lee is made a worse player by his defeats. Go is a fight between two less-than-perfect human minds. As you said, it's like pitting a car against a sprinter... we only have to realize AlphaGo is a motor-powered vehicle, not a simulated sprinter.

Well and,
SEDOL LEE WON THE FOURTH MATCH! :)

I think you'd love it! The anime was good but I preferred the manga. I wanted to learn how to play Go after reading the manga, as you did haha. I turned out to be a real bad player. I still have a mini Go set somewhere in my room. Hmm...
