Needy and insecure writer is Needy and insecure...

So... A couple of months ago, I started a fusion story, one that as far as I know, hadn't been done in the 5-0 fandom before. Despite one of the leads being beyond amazing in the other verse. I like my story a lot.  Then I saw a couple of weeks ago that someone else has also started one. If I post it now, is it copying? I feel they are quite ( Read more... )

Hi, here from a friend's flist.

it will be all right. As you say they are quite different (different settings, following different parts of the fusion source with differing degrees of closeness).

Fandom and writing is about creating; our sources all link up, fuse and catalyse new stories. Think about how many different Sentinel fusions are out there in all the different fandoms -- countless. No one minds nor do they call their fusion the first fusion and ask others not to write.

Enjoy writing your story.

Hi there back :) Who is your friend?
Thanks. That's reassuring. I was thinking about the number of Sentinel fusions. I think they're all so different from each other and I never get bored with them!

I was excited to see someone else with the same idea, but then started to worry...

Yes.

And, no.

Yes, keep on writing and post your fusion story. The very fact that you are asking means that you are not 'stepping' on anybody's 'toes'.

Around the time I bought my first car, the state of Maryland introduced the Chesapeake Bay license plate in support of the Chesapeake Bay. By the time I was ready to get one (procrastination extraordinaire), my brother Dan (Yep! I've got my very own 'Danno' :) had gotten one for his new car. I expressed my concern/angst to my mother that Danny would think that I was copying him. She was emphatic in her belief that I was not copying his actions.

So, no, you are not copying someone else's idea. This fusion story is yours. Bring. It. On.

By the way, D and I still get Bay plates for our vehicles.

Aww cute story! (And whenever I see chesapeake, my brain sees it as cheapskate... Oops!)

I will keep writing. Watching the movie for 'research' as we speak. #steveandbabiesmakesmyheadasplode

Go for it, BB!! Similarities are a natural occurrence in fandom. And in real life. After all, Lion King is Hamlet with lions and meercats and warthogs.

If author #2 tries to claim you "stole" the idea, you have proof that it's just a coincidence and that you started yours well before the second story was posted.

Hope this helps.

Thanks :)
I do have proof should it ever come to that, I emailed it to my butt kicker and cheerleader both. And have the skype windows where I actually write it (it started as a joke haha)

Now I need to watch the Lion King. Because now my brain is doing this thing where there's a meerkat who talks with a Jersey accent and Kamekona is Pumba... Oh god.

Which story are you talking about? You know I will always tell you to continue writing. Just because you have the same idea, doesnt mean your stories are going to be the same.

(Just came across this) I think that folks can come up with the same basic plotline, especially in the same fandom. It is prevalent in The Sentinel fandom, as jimandblair mentioned. There were a half dozen "It's a Wonderful Life" fusions, and they all stood on their own, even though they retained the same basic plotline. Speaking of TS, I have a fusion I've been working on for a while, where Steve is a Sentinel and Danny his guide, and just because it has already been written by others does not mean I stole their idea.

Looking forward to it.
