Last night, my inner fangirl beat my sensible side into submission and - despite having already ordered it online - I made a quick dash to the supermarket after work to buy Star Trek XI on DVD ( Read more... )

Instead, I found that I was pleasantly surprised; that my background knowledge made the differences all the more enjoyable to watch.

I wish I'd been watching with you! My own feelings, as you know, are mixed - on the one hand, I enjoy Pine's performance - it's amazing how much he can imply and how perfectly he often mimics Shatner, while keeping the characters distinct - and especially his interaction with Nimoy; on the other, I miss McCoy (Urban just doesn't quite bring his character across) and am often deeply troubled by Spock. What this wavering opinion says about my psyche, I care not to question, but I think it's also largely indicative of an unfocused plot and characterisation that is frequently contradictory.
