World AIDS Day

Dave Hingsburger wrote a beautiful post for World AIDS Day. He writes about gay men. Of course, nowadays, this illness also ravages parts of Africa and kills prostitutes. I wonder, if it mostly affected rich, white, heterosexual men, would we have better medication, or even a vaccine? Or am I just being bitter?

Ah, must not be a phrase you've come across yet in your travels, sorry! It's a somewhat-common English language expression. People's eyes will tear up and they will sniffle in response to excessive dust. So when an emotional reaction causes someone to tear up, sometimes that phrase is used (or less commonly one might reference cutting onions but it isn't as versatile obviously), though it's understood as an irony-- nobody is fooled that you were cutting an onion or suddenly exposed to dust at, say, somebody's wedding or a moving piece of writing. ;)
