Ok, if I'm going to ask for a new iron for Christmas, what do you recommend and why?

I really like my Rowenta. (DE-871 Serie B) It has a button that allows me to steam in a vertical position, so I can use it to steam drapes or costumes on my dummy. It heats up really fast, steams really well & I managed to drop it off the ironing board onto the concrete floor the other day and I didn't break it. (not recommended) I also like that it has an auto shut off, if I don't move it around, after 5 minutes it starts to cool off.

My mom and my mom-in-law both have this iron too.

The Black & Decker D2030 was far and away the winner in the Consumer Reports review of irons (Oct 2006), and remains the bestseller at Amazon. After burning through several cheap Sunbeams for my Modest Bachelor Ironing Needs(tm), I finally broke down and bought the D2030 earlier this year. It's very, VERY nice, even on those crazy silk shirts that the women in my life insist on buying for me. I use it every weekday morning. It has all the usual bells and whistles, plus plenty of steamy goodness.

I'd go for a 9-iron. They've got a higher loft than a 1-iron. Maybe even a sand wedge.

That might do as a treatment for my old iron, which takes pleasure in globbing crap onto my fabric...
