As soon as I saw this post, I knew this would be something to savor. But WOW! This tale is so vivid that I was there outside the casualty ward at St. Mungo’s. Even though I know this story, I felt as if it was happening in real time. Augusta's worry and her strength are so vivid. She isn't the nicest woman but she is intelligent, steel strong and loving. Even though I know Neville was saved, I was terrified while reading this as if it wasn't a tale that I knew. Great uses of magic too. I really appreciate the bits about Legilimency and how Alice used it. Also, how the bedrooms and Alice's office were spelled so strongly that they would have stayed aloft even if the house collapsed. Oh, and how difficult it was to reverse the transfiguration, even after Augusta figured it out. As always, while short, this is a very nuanced story that offers a great deal. I hadn't even thought about Neville's family on his mother's side but now I will always see them this way, destroyed by their anger and grief.

By the way, meet Gran by thanfiction

Thanks for your wonderful and encouraging set of comments. I'm glad you liked my depiction of Gran. I'm very fond of that woman. It's very good to hear that I was able to create suspence about such a familiar story.

If you are interested in Alice's family, I have a story about the relationship between Alice's father and Neville. It's called Thursday with Granddad http://vegablack62.livejournal.com/529.html#cutid1. There's some background on Alice's mother as well. Augusta appears too.

I love Than's picture of Gran. I may try to grab it as an icon.
