====================================
Staring at the ceiling of my tiny room, I wasn’t bothered much if I missed the meeting, wasn’t bothered if I didn’t get a place. I felt alone in this tiny little room in which most of my pitiful teenage years had held. I felt alone, and there was nothing I could do to get rid of that feeling. I looked around the small room, there was the doors with blue hibiscus flower patterns. There was no window so it tended to be dark. Everything else was wood, the only thing covering the walls of this room were the nobility clothes of my family strung up on pegs, and a Zanpaku my father had given to me when I started the academy. I could hear light quick footsteps on the deck outside heading towards my room. I closed my eyes and counted to 10.
‘One….two….three….four…..five-’
“Sen! Sen wake up it’s time to go!” I could hear Mekoto squeaking. I rolled my head to the side and opened my eyes blinking at her. Mekoto’s expression changed, she looked concerned, she walked over to me and squatted by my bed.
“Did you get any sleep last night?” she said, a slight quiver in her voice. She has known me as long as I can remember, she knows how I get.
“Plenty.” I replied, staring again at the ceiling of the room. I felt Mekoto’s hand slide gently across my cheek.
“Its okay, you’re so great you’ll get into a fantastic squad!”
“My ass. I’m always off sick; I haven’t been there half the time I shoulda been.” I said turning away from her. Mekoto pulled me up by the arm. I stared at her, she stared back. Her expression reflected the sadness that I felt, but would not share.
“Don’t be so negative…get your clothes on and lets get going.” She said and walked out of the room. I could see her silhouette through the thin paper panels of the door. She wasn’t going to leave without me, and that could ruin her chances too. I sighed loudly so she could hear me and then got on my clothes. It was the first time I’d worn them in weeks, Mekoto had never seen me in them. When I opened the door and stepped out, Mekoto squealed and hugged me, I felt the tension in my body, but I couldn’t throw her off.
“You look fantastic! Like a real Shinigami!!” She looked up at me with those big, honest, glowing blue eyes. I tried to smile, to show her that I wasn’t that bad. She still looked up at me with sadness. She traced the line of the great scar on my face with her finger. Running from just above my eyebrow to halfway down my cheek. Because of it I was blind in my right eye; this also wasn’t good on Shinigami terms unless you were really good. Mekoto smiled and pulled something wrapped in cloth out of a small pocket on the side of her robes. She handed it to me and smiled warmly.
“It’s a graduation present.” She said. I un-wrapped the cloth and peered at the item. It was small and black with long silk ribbons at the back. I moved it around my hands, and tried to guess what it was. I couldn’t.
“What is this Mekoto?” she laughed. She liked it when I sounded confused.
“It’s an eye patch, lean down so I can put it on.” I leaned down. Mekoto came to just below my shoulders, but at some point in our lives, she was the taller of the two. She tied the ribbon at the back, she had placed it at an angle making one side go past the top of my ear and the other diagonally across my forehead. She smiled admiring her work.
“You look cool!” she said giving me thumbs up. I shook my head and walked past her.
“Come on, we have to get going.” I shouted back, I heard Mekoto squeak and run past me.
I walked slowly to the square, no doubt Mekoto was already there. It was sunny today, I had to shield my eye from the sun. My left eye had always been sensitive, this was another negative strike on the board for a place in a good squad. I sighed and dragged my right hand along the smooth white sandstone of the walls on either side of me. I was tall enough to touch the roof slates if I stood on my tip-toes. I couldn’t care less about the squads, I had only gotten so far because of my father. I somewhat hated him for it, but a father must be respected. Blinking and wiping a tear from my eye I walked into the square. Some people round about me exchanged glances and muttered. I found Mekoto with Al, a friend of Mekoto’s that she never shut up about. No doubt she had told him of me too. He looked at me with a strange look.
“Sen? You’re looking well.” I gave him glance and looked away. “I see you’ve adopted the ‘Strong, Silent Type’ look then?” I stared at him and sighed through my nose, he seemed like a pain in the ass, but Mekoto liked him so I supposed I had to put up with him.
“You know, that look is old, and you certainly don’t suit it. I think you suit a ‘Moody, but Interesting’ look.” He grinned to himself.
“Shut your mouth, you’re not even capable of sustaining a ‘look’. You’re so common that the only ‘look’ you can manage is that of a beggar.” I had never spoken like that before, it’s the way my father speaks to me, not in the same context, but the way of speaking and tone was his. Mekoto gasped and grabbed my arm.
“Sen! That was horrible! Apologise!” I turned my head away, I don’t know what inclined me to make the remark, but it felt damn good and I wasn’t going to take it back.
“Sen!” I looked down at her speckled face and bit the inside of my cheek. I had to take it back. Mekoto had powers on me, I felt lame but I looked as far away as possible from Al and muttered an apology.
“Don’t worry about it, I know you’re screaming on the inside.” I gave him a glance and looked towards a podium that had been set up in the far North corner of the square. It was sky blue at the base, and white all the way up to the slanted desk at the top, which was golden. It created a glare and I had to turn away. Al looked me up and down.
“Why do you look like a pirate?”
“Why do you look like an asshole?” I retorted. “Leave me the hell alone.” Al raised his eyebrows and stood a bit away from me.
“I wish you wouldn’t act so scary.” I hear Mekoto say from behind me.
“They’re readin’ out the names, you’d better listen.” Mekoto smiled and clung to my arm. I looked down at her, I could feel the blood rushing to my cheeks and I shrugged her off. She giggled and hugged my front, feeling my stomach.
“You’re too skinny Sen, you need to eat more.”
“I aint skinny, ‘sides I aint got a big appetite.” I pushed her off and hid my blushing face from her. I listened to the names Mekoto was next.
“Mekoto, you’s up.” Mekoto gulped and stood next to me.
“Karaza Mekoto.” Mekoto squeaked and made her way through the crowd, she accepted the scroll and then (quite undignified) ran down to meet me. I frowned and patted her head.
“Open it.”
“Not until you get yours.”
“That’s a long time to wait, I’m one of the last ones.” Mekoto shook her head and smiled, holding her scroll like it was the most precious thing in the Soul Society. We waited a good 3 hours before it was my turn, I wasn’t ‘one’ of the last ones, I was the last one.
“Zorandesku Senji.” I sighed and made my way slowly to the podium.
‘Typical. I feel bad for Mekoto, she’s been waitin’ to open that scroll for hours.’
I thought as I reached the podium. I could feel all eyes on me as I bowed before the Taicho and accepted my scroll. I bowed again and was about to leave when he touched my arm.
“You’ve done your father proud, you bring much honour to your family.” I stared at him surprised for a moment then bowed.
“Thank you Nubaski Taicho.” He nodded and let me go, I walked hurriedly through the crowd to meet with Mekoto and Al. Al’s name was Alzend Kurosambaski, which hinted at nobility, but I didn’t say anything. Mekoto was bursting.
“Yay! Let’s open them!” she squealed. I shook my head and gently broke the wax seal on my placement scroll. I unravelled it slowly and read.
~~~~~
Zorandesku Senji,
You have brought great honour to your friends and your family by joining the academy and getting this far, not many do. It gives me, Nubaski Taicho, great pleasure to place you into a squad. You were placed in this squad for: attitude, strength and will. You have excelled in all. This is your squad:-
11th Squad, 3rd seat.
Be proud of your squad and work hard in it, you will go far in the Shinigami life. Behave and do your best, it’s all I can ask for.
Nubaski, Sanjetsu Taicho
I almost dropped the scroll. My heart skipped a beat as I found I had managed to get into the 11th squad, second strongest squad. Mekoto whooped and jumped on my arm, she had been reading my scroll upside down.
“11th squad! See I told you! That’s the second strongest! Not to mention 3rd seat! Whoa you’re so great!” She hugged me, and I couldn’t help but smile, I really thought it was the 2nd squad for me.
“What did you get Mekoto?” I asked, feeling happier than I had all day.
“I got 4th squad.” She smiled sweetly.
“That aint bad.” I patted her head. Al waltzed over to me grinning insanely.
“11th Squad eh? That’s great, I thought you would get 12th or maybe 5th.”
“What’s yer point? What’d you get?”
“6th.” We both stood frozen at the grinning fiend in front of us. 6th squad was the strongest squad. Mekoto smiled and walked to him.
“That’s fantastic! Well done!” Al grinned at me, his eyes never leaving mine.
“Too bad you only got 11th, you obviously aren’t as strong. Mind you, Mekoto’s told me how sickly you are, so maybe if you had been there all the time, you would have got better.”
“Shut yer yap hole, I got 11th that’s second strongest. That’s good enough for me, I aint gunna be wipin’ it in everyone’s face like you’ll probably do.”
“Hmm second strongest….you’ll always be second to someone eh?” I growled at him, then a thought came to me.
“What seat are you?” He froze. I knew it, he’s in the 6th squad but he has a low seat, probably just got in by the skin of his teeth.
“14th…”
“Isn’t there only 14 members to that squad?” I smiled, getting my revenge. He grunted and walked away.
“Ass-crack. How can you like him Mekoto?”
“We’ve always been friends. Hey Sen! We won’t see much of each other now, our squads houses are at different ends of the court.”
“Yeah I know, sucks don’t it?” Mekoto smiled and hugged me again.
“Hey, now you can put on those great clothes.” I had forgotten about my custom made Shinigami clothes my father had given me, I shrugged her off and walked on a bit.
“Are you coming?” Mekoto nodded and ran to get to my side. Tomorrow I was going to move to the Squad house quarters, it wasn’t bothering me, but the fact that Mekoto will be so far away saddened me.
That night while I lay in bed, I walked over to the clothes, they were the same as normal Shinigami clothes, but lighter and had various pockets. I wasn’t going to wear the Shinigami training clothes again, but I liked the pants, so I kept them close to the uniform. My mother had always told me to be different and unique, and I was definitely both, and now in my new squad, I was going to prove it.
